Secret Santas

Secret Santas give out $12,000 in $100 bills

If you had $12,000 sitting in the bank, what would you do?

You might pay down the mortgage, buy a car, maybe leave the money to collect some measly interest.

Well, how about withdrawing it in crisp $100 bills, heading to the streets and handing out every last cent to strangers? That’s exactly what a married couple did Monday, for the fourth year running. They took out all that cash — remember, $12,000! — and went around Lincoln Park and Detroit, wearing red Christmas elf hats, and gave the money to people they did not know.

No strings attached.

“I get such joy out of this,” said the woman, who, like her husband, allowed the Free Press to ride along in exchange for not naming them. “What I get for my 12 grand every year is the best day of my life.”
