That's What She Said

Voting Time :)

Alright, I need some input. Ryan and I are looking for some outdoor furniture for our balcony. I don't want to give it all away, because I think it sounds lame (if you don't see the picture in my head, hehe), so for now I will just say that I need help picking out fabric (YES, I AM GOING TO TRY AND HAND SEW CUSHIONS :) ).

What are your top 2 fabrics? (We are going to have it on our balcony right outside our living room, so you will be able to see the fabric from the main part of our house - even though it will be outside) NO PARTICULAR ORDER BELOW (just the order I saw them on the Joann Fabric website)

Mouton = Charger

Ryan LOVED cheering for Jonas Mouton this past season while he was LB at the University of Michigan. Looks like he was just drafted in the NFL (2nd Round - 61 pick overall)... And he will be playing right here in San Diego - AS A CHARGER! YAY MOUTON!

5 Year Anniversary

Five years ago today I graduated from the University of Michigan! I can't believe it has been that long already!

My aunt scanned a copy of the little graduation blurb that the Monroe Evening News had about me graduating :)

I don't think I was a part of 'Students for Life' and I don't know if the plans for a 'career in finance' will ever pan out, but the rest all sounds familiar :)

It's Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine!

PS Totally off topic, I just went to the MEN website to get the link and look what ad I saw:

I think it is HILARIOUS! A. Because they actually sell Ryan's clothes there (or they will be in the near future). and B Because it is Island Surf being advertised in the MONROE Evening News. Sorry for the side-track, I just got a chuckle out of it :)

Carlsbad Street Faire

COUNTY'S LARGEST STREET FAIRE

Sunday, May 1, 2011, 8am - 5pm

Located in the heart of Carlsbad, Carlsbad Village Faire features over 850 unique vendors, making it the largest street festival of its kind in the county. The art fair offers a little of everything, including arts and crafts, antiques, unique clothing, items from around the world, and more.

In fact, many vendors who attend this festivity, especially those from out of town, don't make it to the smaller ones in the county.

Also at the faire are children's rides, an international food center, and an old-fashioned pancake breakfast guarantee that you'll find fun for the whole family.

CHURCH BULLETINS

They're Back! Those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services:

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.
--------------------------
The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.'
--------------------------
Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.
--------------------------
Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you.
--------------------------
Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.
--------------------------
Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.
--------------------------
For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.
--------------------------
Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.
--------------------------
Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.
--------------------------
A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow..
--------------------------
At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice.
--------------------------
Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.
--------------------------
Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.
--------------------------
Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered..
--------------------------
The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.
--------------------------
Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow.
--------------------------
The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.
--------------------------
This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.
--------------------------
Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM . All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. Is done.

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.
--------------------------
Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM . Please use the back door.
--------------------------
The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM . The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Disney Princesses

So I was just telling a friend this afternoon how I want to try and talk Ryan into getting our Disney passes again this year (probably in the fall though, since the ones we get have the summer blacked out, so it would be silly to get them now and pay to not use them for the next 3 months). Anyway, she was telling me that we better, especially when their kids get older, so that they can send them to Disney with Auntie Carlee :)

It made me do a quick Google search for Disney, and look at one of the funny pictures I found. THIS IS MORE LIKE THE TYPE OF DISNEY PRINCESS I WOULD BE :)

Liar, liar, pants on fire...

NCAA formally charges Jim Tressel with lies, coverup of OSU violations

Initially, before coach Jim Tressel was outed for essentially lying to his bosses and the NCAA, it looked like Ohio State was getting off kind of easy. In exchange for OSU's cooperation, the NCAA was willing to play good cop. It could have suspended five ineligible players who allegedly sold and/or bartered memorabilia to a local tattoo shop for the Sugar Bowl, but it didn't. It could have declared all five players retroactively ineligible and stricken all eleven Buckeye wins in 2010 from the books, along with their share of the Big Ten title, but it didn't. It could have gone after Ohio State the way it went after USC, in search of bowl bans and significant scholarship losses, but it didn't. In the wake of the sledgehammer that fell on the Trojans last summer, the punishment for Ohio State — a straightforward five-game suspension for four of the offending players to start the 2011 season, games the Buckeyes are likely to win, anyway — seemed minimal, perfunctory. Which is one of the reasons it made so many people so angry, or confused, or both.

That, of course, was before Tressel's long-running, deliberate coverup of the violations saw the light of day, and before it became clear that the NCAA — and possibly the higher-ups at Ohio State themselves — had been misled by one of the most respected men in the profession. What cooperation will buy you in leniency, deception will buy in retribution, and the NCAA began to extract its pound of flesh Friday with an official notice of allegations to the university.

Rob Machado Pro Jr

One of the perks of having your husband working at a surf company, is that we get the prem-o seats at surf contests, hehe. Today we went down to Cardiff where Reef was co hosting (with Hurley) the Rob Machado Pro Jr contest. Ryan had a some of his work up (see the art below that was all over the photo booth), which was cool to see. We hung out at the Reef booth for a while, picked up some gear (giant sandal blow up raft), played a little mini corn-hole, and of course had to get some pictures done in the photo booth.

The photos aren't loaded on the website yet, but once they are I am sure I will post them. You can at least go to the Photobooth Company's website and see Ryan's artwork there too. Ryan met the guy that co-owns the company (who actually does art for Chemistry too), so maybe in the future Ry will be able to do work with them too :)

PS You can "Get Rob'd" on the website... Here are our pictures... Let me see yours!

Up Vinyl

How cute is this Vinylmation?! There isn't a release date for it yet (because it is one of the BIG ones - 9 inches, instead of the normal 3), but still... It might make the Christmas list this year :)

Catfish

Ryan and I watched the movie Catfish last night. We were looking through lists of 'Must See Movies of 2010' and it was on a couple of the lists so we decided to go for it. We had no idea what it was about before we watched it. It was actually a very entertaining movie. I feel like I have seen Law & Order episodes with this as the premise. I told Ryan after it was done that I liked it, but it was too perfect to be a real documentary. He did some research (watched the 20/20 interviews and such) and come to find out it really was real. If you haven't seen it, I would suggest it.

In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel's brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.

That’s right, TOMS is no longer just a shoe company. We’re a One for One company. And the next chapter is closer than you think.

New Weeds

Ryan and I started watching Weeds when we had Netflix. We are all caught up and I am excited for the new season (even if it might be the last season that they do)

Bring out the Brooms

Danny Cleary scores winner in third as Red Wings advance

Danny Cleary shot from behind the post, squeezing the puck through a hole seemingly no wider than a skate blade. Todd Bertuzzi muscled an opponent and the puck to the front of the crease, getting a fortunate bounce to find the net.

Two goals in 2 minutes and the Detroit Red Wings were headed into the next round, the Phoenix Coyotes toward an uncertain future.

Detroit counterpunched Phoenix's best shot through two periods and dominated with a flurry in the third, sweeping the Coyotes out of the playoffs and possibly out of the desert with a 6-3 victory Wednesday night.

"We knew they were going to come out and play with their best effort and I thought they did, but we really wanted to win tonight," Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said.

Starburst Dress

Mom Makes Dress from Starburst Wrappers for Teen's Prom (Video)

Maybe you dreamed of a beautiful, designer-y dress for your prom. Maybe you even wore such a dress for your prom. Not this teen: she sported a frock of old Starburst wrappers to her prom. Made by her mom.

Wisconsonite Kerrin Frey crafted her daughter, Tara's, dress from thousands of bright paper candy wrappers, each one carefully folded (8 times!) and creased with a tweezer. Once prepped, the miniature wax papers were woven into a basket-like overlay for a muslin dress.

The project took 6 years.

Cosmic Love

Can't get enough of this song...

Dentist Appointment

Normally my dentist appointments always go EASY-BREEZY. I walk in, they tell me I have beautiful teeth, ask me if I want to 'fix' my gap between my front teeth (which I always say NO THANK YOU), and then get my cleaning. All of the above happened, but there was a small addition this morning... My dentist asked, 'So do you have any problem areas, or anything you wanted to bring up?' And that's where it starts.

'Well, I have to say, my husband has mentioned that I have been 'chattering' my teeth at night. Now it isn't a nightly thing (or at least he doesn't notice it every night), but he has commented on it a number of times. And my jaw hurt for a good 2 weeks last month.' - me

'Hum... well, that sounds like you are grinding your teeth, let me look to see if you have any wear on them' - dentist

(joking around to lighten the mood, because she may have noticed I was nervous, since normally my dental appointments are smooth sailing) 'Maybe you are just cold at night and chattering your teeth' - dentist

'Yeah, or maybe I am hungry and I am eating in my sleep - sort of like the scene in Hook where they are fake eating' - me

(looks in my mouth) 'Hum... well, it looks like you have been grinding your teeth. And actually you have chipped one of your front teeth because of the grinding' - dentist

'Uh oh. Now what' - me

'Well, I would suggest you get a NIGHT GUARD (emphasis is mine). It will A. help you to not cause more damage, B. help your husband be able to sleep better because he doesn't hear you, and C. train your muscles to not do it anymore'

So on top of my normal cleaning I was fitted for a NIGHT GUARD! It wasn't cheap either ($375), but I figured that I should probably handle it now before I wreck any more teeth and have to pay to get them fixed (and medicine for my sore jaw). The mold was nasty (I felt like I was going to choke on the pink goo), so I am thankful that I never had any teeth/ mouth issues before now. Anyway, I have to go back in 2 weeks to pick up my new night attire.

PS I know the picture is NOTHING like the retainer type thing I will wear, but that is the picture that came to mind when they mentioned it.

Three Down

Early-period goals shoot Wings to 3-0 lead over Coyotes

The 17,000 fans in white T-shirts made the inside of Jobing.com Arena look like the inside of a popcorn popper. Fueled by the energy, the Phoenix Coyotes issued a series of board-rattling hits on the Red Wings.

Detroit's response? A shrug and two spirit-crushing goals.

Ruslan Salei and Drew Miller had goals 44 seconds apart to squelch Phoenix's initial flurry, and the Red Wings scored early in each period to push the Coyotes to the brink of elimination with a 4-2 win Monday night."

"We came out and weathered their storm," Miller said. "They came out hitting and we got two big goals quick. From there, we just kept going. Every time they came hard, we found a way to push back and keep going."

Detroit leveled the Coyotes in its last playoff game in the desert, eliminating them with a 6-1 win in Game 7 of last year's first round. The Red Wings put the lights out on Phoenix's whiteout this time with the two goals in the opening 2:41, another by Valtteri Filppula nearly as quickly in the second period and Johan Franzen's score 45 seconds into the third.

Geo Caching

This afternoon the summer weather was out, so we decided to go do a little geo caching. We went over to Calavera Park in Carlsbad. We found 5 caches, along with some other goodies. I found a arrow (with the tip gone) that we used to bushwhack with, a deer toy, a container that we could use for another geo cache, and A RATTLE SNAKE! When we were hiking around I asked Ryan 'So what do I do if I see a rattler?' He said, 'Stay calm and still' Probably 25 minutes later we walked up, heard the rattle, and saw the BIG snake. And what do I do? Yell and take off running across a stream. Oh well, neither of us got bit and we had a fun story to tell about it. And of course Mr. Ryan - the photographer - took tons of pictures (none of the rattler, because we were too freaked out). Here are a few of them:

A few more of the pictures (that I approved) are here.

Dorito Taco

Taco Bell Tests Nacho Cheese Doritos Taco Shells

Though plenty of college kids have probably had this exact idea late at night (worth noting is the 2009 launch of a new Doritos flavor, Late Night Tacos At Midnight), the Dorito taco shell is one step closer to becoming a reality. Taco Bell is testing Doritos Locos Tacos, in which the ingredients are similar as Taco Bell's other offerings, but the outside is, well, a lot more orange. There has been a Facebook campaign (aptly titled "Taco Shells Made From Doritos Movement") for quite some time but according to the page, they were not informed that the product is now actually in development. It is unclear if or when this product will be nationally available, but if you're in the Toledo, Ohio area, you may just be in luck, as it's one of the test markets for the bright orange nacho cheese shells.
