Tim Burton Retrospective Will Roll Out in Los Angeles

If you're starting to think about spring travel and are a Tim Burton fan, a trip to Los Angeles may be in order.

In May, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will roll out a major retrospective, "Tim Burton," exploring the director's well-known animated and live-action film career as well as work he has done as an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer.

Over 700 works will be on display for the show, including drawings, paintings photographs, storyboards, moving-image works, puppets, costumes, and more.

"Tim Burton" debuted at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 2009. The New York Times called the show "illuminating" and says it is "a must for film buffs and Burton fans."

The exhibition has since been at the Australian Center for the Moving Image. It's currently at Toronto's Bell Light Box until April 17.

Specifically for the LA museum, Burton will transform the Resnick Pavillion into a "Burtonesque" environment by installing two large-scale outdoor artworks. The show runs in LA from May 29 through October 31, 2011. Admission is $20.

Tickets for "Tim Burton" go on sale to the general public on May 2; for museum members on Mar. 30.

Born in Burbank in 1958, Burton worked as animator at Walt Disney Studios before breaking out on his own. He is famous for his quirky films featuring dark, offbeat characters such as Beetle Juice, Edward Scissorhands, and Jack Skellington in "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Recently, he directed "Alice in Wonderland."
