Celebrate YOU

Today I want to take a moment and CELEBRATE YOU! Celebrate what you are doing and how far you've come. Whether you are a runner, taking a few extra minutes to walk the dog, cartwheeling in the park, scootering with your kids, hiking on the weekends, biking around the block, etc - IF YOU ARE MOVING, YOU ARE GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

But at times we don't feel that way, do we? Often we don't celebrate our accomplishments and it's normally because of one little word - COMPARISON! Maybe it's that nagging voice in our head that tells us we aren't as fast as so-and-so. Or maybe we go out and have an awesome run only to come home and check Instagram to see we didn't run even half the distance as that person and now our great run doesn't feel so stellar any more.

No matter how hard it is to believe, the only person I should be comparing myself to is the ME from yesterday (and the same goes for you). It is so easy for us to look at what others are doing and compare it to where we are at in our lives - but you know what? We aren't them... And they aren't us... THIS IS MY JOURNEY, NO ONE ELSE'S! Even if the change is minute, we are still making positive change! Progress is progress NO MATTER HOW SMALL!

Sometimes all we need is a little change in perspective. In college I went through a time where I was struggling with my faith. It seemed as though everyone else was "hearing" from God, yet I felt as if I was chasing after a God that didn't want to be found. Wise counsel in my life at the time said something along the lines of "If you never heard from God again, would you still follow Him?". That was a tough question to answer and one that took a big change of perspective on my part. I needed to look at the BIG picture (in that instance, the eternal perspective). And in fitness it can be the same thing.

"They" say that most times people will give up because they are too focused on how far they have left to go, rather than noticing how far they've come. It is easy to focus on the here and now - the workout we just had, the run we just finished, etc. But when was the last time you took a moment and thought about where you were 6 months ago/ a year ago/ three years ago? The Disneyland Half Marathon (which I will be running at the beginning of September) marks my running anniversary. I ran it first in 2012 - just a mere three years ago... Before that,  I WASN'T A RUNNER! And what about a year ago? I was running 9 minute miles and stoked about it. Every so often, REMEMBER HOW FAR YOU'VE COME! Maybe instead of focusing on what's coming in the windshield, it is time to look in the rear view mirror and notice the voyage you've been taking. This life is about the journey - the BIG picture! CELEBRATE YOUR PROGRESSION!

I'm sorry that this post was full of 101 cliches, but they tend to hang around because of the truth they speak into our lives. And I have to be honest, I don't know if this post was more for you or something I needed to hear myself... I'm still working on this whole 'self love' thing, but hopefully we will get there eventually! So let's take today to APPRECIATE OUR ACHIEVEMENTS!

How often do you think back on your journey?

Yes! This is a perfect weekend starter!
I feel like my journey is getting better everyday. Or at least moving in the right direction!

I never think back about my journey! And instead I have to....reading your words, as you've written, even if full of cliché, have made me think about why I've started. Instead I'm too focused on what's next. I will run my first half marathon race in Spain in October, and I'm training for that. If I think about myself 6 months ago, I could never thought about a thing like this!
So, yes, I need to stop and think about why I've started, to find a new impulse to go on! ;) Thanks for these words!
