DIY Costumes

Last week I saw an article published about the fastest and slowest half marathons (based on the median finishing time). If you didn't see the article, you can check it out here.

SPOILER ALERT - The slowest races are runDisney ones!

Now, please hear me, that does NOT mean that runDisney events are bad, that you couldn't PR at them, that they aren't "real" races, or that you shouldn't run them. I think my main take away from the article (and having participated in them in the past) is you need to ADJUST your expectations when it comes to runDisney events. (Another observation is that runDisney events welcome EVERYONE, no matter how fast or slow, AS LONG AS YOU GO!)

For me, they are all about fun! I mean, the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon was my very first half marathon I ever ran (automatic PR - HELLO!). I figured, if I hated running, at least I was in the happiest place on earth, so it would make the race a little better :) PS Thankfully I LOVED it (if you couldn't tell, hehe).

Megan from Running Toward The Prize and I after we
finished the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon together!

I have a LOT of runDisney events coming up in the next few months - the Dumbo Double Dare (Disneyland 10K on Saturday and Disneyland Half Marathon on Sunday) at the end of August, the Avenger's Half Marathon in mid-November, the Dopey Challenge (WDW 5K on Thursday, WDW 10K on Friday, WDW Half Marathon on Saturday, and WDW Full Marathon on Sunday) at the beginning of January, and the Star Wars Half Marathon in mid-January.

My main objective when it comes to runDisney events is HAVE A BLAST!

And one way to have fun is to run in a costume! The two races at the end of the month - the Disneyland 10K and the Disneyland Half Marathon - will be the first time I am MAKING MY OWN COSTUME! Sure, in the past I have "dressed up", but it was by wearing a specialized top or the color scheme of a character, not by physically making the outfit.

I have started putting together my costumes and am RATHER PLEASED with how they are coming along. No, SORRY, I won't be revealing my outfits quite yet, but I did want to nudge you, DON'T BE INTIMIDATED TO MAKE YOUR OWN! (The process is half the fun!!) We don't have a sewing machine (in fact, I really don't even know if we have a needle and thread in our house), I'm not very crafty, and I am still managing. Do your research (Pinterest and Google images have been my friends lately), look in your closet to see what pieces you already have to use, and BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!

I'm really excited to show you what I'm making (but just in case it falls apart by the time the races get here I don't want to let the cat out of the bag too soon). I know they won't be flawless (shoot, I am doing it all with a tiny glue gun), but the name of the game isn't perfection, it's FUN!

Have you ever made a costume before? Would you ever consider running in a costume?

Can't wait to see what your costumes are! We're doing a simple costume for the 10k (really just a shirt!), but I'm still excited about it since I'm not sure it's one I've ever seen at a runDisney race.

Also, the whole "slowest race" thing is silly...there's no other races where people are stopping to take pictures and stuff so it's really not even comparable!

I love running in costume, but I limit it to Disney races and Halloween themed races. I'm super jazzed about my costume for Avengers. I'm considering registering for Tinker Bell, but I have no idea what to dress as for that one.
