Cinco De Mayo Trail 10K Race Recap

Saturday morning the hubby and I ran the Cinco de Mayo Trail 10K in Poway.

This is actually the third time we've ran this race. The first time was in 2014 and then we ran it again in 2016.

Left: 2014 / Right: 2016 (Apparently we love matching our socks ;))

The 10K course is pretty grueling, but the hubby loves the trails so I opt in even though I know it's gonna be a hard fought battle each time. Not to mention, if they use your picture in the email blast you sort of have to run it, right?!

Normally the night before a race consists of laying out my flat runner, stretching, foam rolling and an early bed time.

My #FlatCarlee: #TwoPairDontCare PRO socks, red Handful bra, comic book
Sparkle Athletic skirt
, Skechers tank, homemade BOOM hat (thought it went with
the skirt), red and blue QALO silicone wedding bands, lime and purple
Momentum Jewelry wraps
, my Garmin Forerunner 735XT, Nathan handheld,
and my Brooks Ghost with lightning bolt Shwings.

Well, Nike decided the best time to run the #Breaking2 race would be at 8:30pm PST Friday night, which meant it was a late night (obviously I had to stay up to see if the two hour barrier for a full marathon could be broken... and then I was too jazzed from the event to go to bed right away). The unfortunate part was the alarms came too soon for my liking...

I love that this race allows for race morning pick-up. Check-in started at 6:30am and the 10K was set to start at 7:30am, so we shot to be there around 6:45am to give us plenty of time to grab our bibs, use the potties and get to the start.

Easy breezy! The wait was non-existent and everyone is super friendly!

The one negative was parking. All the race info (as well as every time we've been to this park) said parking for non-Poway residents was $5 a car... Well, apparently the price changed to $10 which caused the line to really back up (not sure if folks were arguing the prices or if everyone had to pay with credit cards because they didn't have the extra cash to cover the increase like us). Thankfully we had given ourselves a bit of a buffer and were okay with the delay.

By the time we used the bathrooms (yay for "real" toilets) and pinned our bibs on, it was time to hustle to the starting line. We walked up right as the National Anthem was being sung (after a quick starting line selfie of course).

Can you tell we are ready to do this thang?!

Since this is a fairly small race (they offer a 10K, 5K and Kids Run {approx 1/3 mile}), the "corrals" are set up by estimated pace. The hubby and I lined up between the 9 and 10 minute pace signs and got ready to head out.

Like I mentioned, the 10K is tough. It has two pretty big climbs (that seem to go on forever), but the views definitely make it worth it (not to mention, afterward you feel pretty BA for tackling the course). Our only goal was to HAVE FUN!

Can't you tell we are having a blast?!

We tried to take advantage of the flats and downhills, while trucking along on the uphills at a smart pace.

The climb to the top of the reservoir is TOUGH, but coming back down you get some fun hills to bomb!

WE DID IT! This is the top of the second hill (but for some reason they have a final hill into the finish line).

The announcer mentioned snakes had been seen on the course prior to the start by some of the volunteers, so not only were we keeping our eyes peeled on the terrain and watching our footing, but we were also on the lookout for "nature". Thankfully we didn't see any critters (I think the faster runners scared them all away for us - THANKS GUYS!), although I do have to say that the volunteers shaking maracas on the course did scare us a time or two.

Can you see that trail in the distance? That's where we came from... It's quite the trek!

Lake Poway

The 10K course adds in the extra climb to the dam, but meets back up with the 5K course again.

The temps were pretty perfect (we were expecting storms over the weekend, so we're nervous it'd be a mud run, but the rain stayed away). In the past it's been pretty dry, hot and dusty, so we appreciated the cooler, cloud covered morning.

Even with the 1,300 feet of elevation gain, we were still able to keep a pretty awesome pace.

I don't know if you remember, but recently I donated most of my medals to #Medals4Mettle. This race actually doesn't give out bling unless you place in your age group (the proceeds are used as a fundraising effort for a local, low-income elementary school - so I much prefer the money go to the kids than a medal anyway). I was able to snap a pic of what the medals looked like before the award ceremony (last we checked, I was 9th in my AG and the hubby was 21st).

Even though there isn't any bling, they still take care of the runners with a big spread at the finish line (with scones, cinnamon rolls, bananas, orange slices, Nutzo packets, Kind bars, Starbucks coffee {for donation}, cups of water, etc).

Now that I'm tracking my food I'm more aware of everything going
in my mouth... and making smarter choices!

When the Starbucks tent has mini-maracas you use them for a photo op!
And the race shirts aren't terrible either (I appreciate that they have a women's cut with a v-neck, even if I do use all of my race shirts in Project Repat quilts). Hubby has already rocked (and spilled food on) his!

If you are in the San Diego area, this is definitely a race I'd suggest checking out. We always try to keep this race in mind when planning our calendars. I think it's a fun way to get introduced into trail running (there are some speedy folks out there, but the crew is always very welcoming). The price is great (when we registered a few months before the race it was $30 a person) and even with the difficult course, it is super well organized and a great fundraiser for the school.

A couple of the "official" pictures from the race... Not our finest faces ;)

Would you prefer a race give you a medal at the end or have the money go to a cause?

I am pretty happy with how all of my workouts went this week, but I know next week will be tough because I've got two hard long runs and another test 5K on the docket with some fast paces... But, hey, you gotta run fast to race fast, right?! And I am ready to put in the work!

How were your workouts this past week?

Friday Favorites (& GIVEAWAY)

Friday?! More like Fri-YAY! This has been one of 'those' weeks... So I am STOKED that the weekend is finally here and we can forget these last few days! And what better way to celebrate having a couple days off than by kicking it off with a list of things that I am loving lately ;) So, let's get this party started and get into the post already!

Kelly Roberts' BQ or Bust Journey

If you haven't followed along on Kelly's journey for the last year, you have really been missing out! I am not going to give anything away, but she posted her FINAL EPISODE of her #BQorBust journey earlier this week and it's a MUST WATCH! This lady is such an amazing runner, woman and friend. She is raw and tells it like it is. Her strength and tenacity are unparalleled! Do yourself a favor and watch her latest vlog (PS You may want to grab a couple of tissues because RUNNING IS HARD and the journey is never an easy one {but it is worth every moment!}!)

Cinnamon Roll Waffles

I assumed everyone knew about these, but when it was our turn to bring dessert to our Growth Group this week and most folks seemed floored about the treat I thought I'd share it with the world. So, we don't have a traditional pan that you would make cinnamon rolls in. Crisis averted - use a waffle iron to make said "breakfast snack". The key is not to push down the lid, just let gravity do its thang... I normally put them in when the light is green and then take them out when the light turns green again (maybe about a minute and a half or two minutes).

Sparkly Soul Headbands

I don't know if you follow Sparkly Soul on the social media platforms you are on or not, but they recently released a few new headbands that I'm DYING to get! Three of the newest releases (that I am BIG RED HEART LOVING) are the Black 2-inch Extra Wide Headband, the Wicking Headband and the Galaxy Headband. Ummm... AWESOMESAUCE!

Not only that, but because I love YOU and Sparkly Soul, I wanted to do a GIVEAWAY of one of the new headbands from the Princess Collection! Up for grabs is one of the TIARA Headbands (because all princesses need a crown, right?!). Entering is easy peasy, so start your weekend right and don't miss this AWESOME opportunity!

Walt Wednesday

Some people do a "Wordless Wednesday" post, where they simply share a photo or image, but I thought I'd make a little series out of my Wednesdays. And since I love alliteration so much, why not go with Walt Wednesdays (obviously everyone can use a little break from the seriousness, scariness and sassiness of life - and what better way to help put a smile on your face than with a cute wiener dog picture, am I right?!)... So, without further ado...

WALT WEDNESDAY!

This one was from last year when we were in Big Sur for the Marathon... Let's call it a #WayBackWednesday shot ;)
He legit loves to dig and sit in the holes he makes... so we buried him a bit and he seemed to be in doggy heaven!

When life gets overwhelming, how do you de-stress?

Tracking Your Food

Last week I decided I wanted to add another healthy habit into my life... I wanted to start tracking my food.

First, I literally have no idea how many calories I'm eating. I eat when I'm hungry (or so I think) and stop when I'm full. I eat a vegetarian diet and try to keep it fairly healthy. I'm not big into sweets (I actually gave them up for Lent and didn't really miss them) and don't often drink my calories (I gave up pop a few years back, don't drink coffee or tea, and only have alcohol occasionally {but it's normally liquor because I don't like beer or wine}). I'd assume since I stay around the same weight range that I'm eating the appropriate amount of daily calories, but I realize that knowledge is power.

Source

Next, I'm pretty unaware of serving sizes. I've never really weighed or measured my food (unless it's for a recipe). So I honestly can't tell you if the cereal, almond milk and berries I often have for breakfast is one serving size or three. It doesn't seem "too big" to me, but then again, I realize the American diet is often "bigger is better". #SuperSizeMe

Source

Lastly, I believe if I have to track everything that goes in my mouth, then I will probably be a little more conscious of the decisions I am making. My thought is that having to put down everything I eat and drink will cause me to do a double take on some of the mindless snacking I do throughout the day. Also, having to record I had more than one or two or seven servings may force me to rethink my choices (a serving size for chips is 9 chips?! LIES!).

Source

Like always, when I have a question I take it to the InterWebs. Let's just say, when I asked the world (or at least folks in "my" world) what food tracker they used, the resounding answer was "My Fitness Pal". (Disclaimer: This post is not sponsored or affiliated with My Fitness Pal, it just happened to be the app most everyone who commented on my question mentioned they used or suggested I check out, so it's the one I'm currently trying out.)

I would say 95% of responses included My Fitness Pal!

So technically I started tracking everything as of Monday, April 24th, and thus far I am really digging it (although I hope it's because I'm actually learning and not just because it's a new, shiny habit that will lose it's luster soon).

Source

It has been INCREDIBLY eye opening! I don't know if you noticed, but none of my goals for starting to track my food were to lose weight. I really wanted to use it as a learning experience (i.e. how many calories I'm eating, how my diet is broken up, what I can be doing to get healthier, how large serving sizes really are, etc).

Source

Some of the features I love are: the fact it syncs with my Garmin Connect (that way my exercise is counted in and gives me additional calorie allotment), the fact you can pull up restaurants and add meals from online menus (some restaurants do not have everything listed, but definitely gives you a jumping off point for when you are eating out), the fact there's a bar code scanner in the app so you can scan the foods and it does the searching for you, etc.

Left: You can see how my exercises (strength training + 3 mile run) syncs with the app and adds an extra 300 calories into my daily allotment /
Middle: Menu items from one of our favorite Mexican restaurants / Right: How the barcode scanner works

I know it's only been a week, but it's crazy to think how differently I'm eating due to a silly app. I've noticed that I've slowed on the snacking, that I'm paying attention to the amount of macros (carbs, protein, fat) in different meals, etc.

Pretty surprised my macros were on point when I started tracking

Again, I'm in no way saying this app is the only way to track your food (or even that you should track what's going in your mouth), but if you're interested in potentially adding this healthy habit to your lifestyle, I've found it super helpful. I'll be sure to keep you updated on this, but thought I'd at least give you the heads up that I had started the venture!

Have you ever tracked your food before?

Periods Happen... Period! (& GIVEAWAY)

I'm going to warn the men who read my blog (while I love you dearly), today we're discussing a topic that plagues women and I assume if you continue reading you may run away from your computer screaming "I'M NOT LISTENING!" So, with that out of the way (and, men, if you are still reading, don't say I didn't warn you), now we can begin ;)

Periods. They are the pits. Period.

But, you know what?! WOMEN ARE STRONG AF! I mean, legitimately, who (or what) else do you know that can bleed for days on end without dying?! Chuck Norris can't even claim a feat like that and I hear he is the epitome of a B.A.!

Source

Periods are just one of the many inconveniences (and NORMAL BODILY FUNCTIONS... so let's drop the stigma and talk about this stuff like the mature ladies we are) that women must come to enjoy bare. THANKS A LOT EVE!

Source

Let's be honest, there is nothing I would enjoy more than cuddling up with my pup and some chocolate when Aunt Flow comes to visit, but you probably know me well enough to know that I will let VERY LITTLE get in the way of my fitness routine. I've got major goals on the horizon and I can't be down for the count - especially one out of every four weeks! Thankfully there are companies out there that are willing to try and make "shark week" a little more manageable.

I'm sure you've heard of U by Kotex®, but did you know they recently launched a new line of products to help women stay active while on their periods? U by Kotex® FITNESS*. The new product launch includes three distinct offerings:

You know I've always gotta get my run on... no matter what time of the month it is!

And, shoot doggy, they sent me some of the goodies to try out! I will leave out the bloody details, but let's just say they did the job and they did it well. I am a tampon kind of gal, and I love that the packaging is sturdy and inconspicuous. You can easily throw a couple of these into your running belt or handheld so you're prepared on your next long run.

Some of the things I take with me on a longer run - PROBAR Bolt chews for
fuel, a couple dollars in case I need to stop for hydration, my car or house key,
Sun Bum lip balm, extra hair ties, my phone and a back-up tampon.

Today you can win a prize pack from U by Kotex® FITNESS* - which includes Ultra Thin Pads With Wings (Regular {15 count}), Folded & Wrapped Liners (Regular {40 count}) and Compact Tampons (Regular, Super {15 count}).

Entering is easy, all you need to do it use the Rafflecopter widget below and put your name in to win. This giveaway will last one week with a single winner being selected, winning the three products. Easy peasy, so hurry and enter NOW!
