Rock 'N' Roll San Diego Half Marathon Race Recap

This past Sunday morning I ran the San Diego Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon (and it was actually my FIFTH time running one of the SD races)! {In 2013, 2015, 2016 and this year I ran the Half Marathon and in 2017 I ran the Full Marathon.}

If you haven't read yesterday's recap, make sure to catch up on the 5K that went down on Saturday. It included a fairly lame course, but the people (including two running SUPERSTARS) definitely made up for anything the race lacked!

No big deal... Just Meb and Des hanging out at the 5K!

Well, now that everyone's on the same page, let's jump right into it. After the 5K a few of us went to grab some brunch at Breakfast Republic. The food was yummy and the company was great. At 10am there was a live taping of an Ali On The Run podcast with Meb, Chris Heuisler (the Westin running concierge) and Andrea Barber (you may know her as Kimmy Gibler from Full/ Fuller House). Brian, the hubby and I made our way over to the event to give our girl Andrea some love!

Don't worry, Chris didn't mind that I was still in my sweaty clothes from the 5K earlier in the morning;)

Once the podcast event was over it was time to head over and check into the hotel so I could grab a quick shower before the PRO Compression ambassador meet-up. PRO was kind enough to host the ambassadors who were in town for some pizza and shenanigans at BASIC. I loved being able to catch up with friends who I don't see nearly often enough.

Eventually we had to wrap up the shin-dig and head over to the Expo to grab our bibs for Sunday's race. (I super appreciate they allow for race day pick up of the bibs for the 5K, but still do require you to go to the Expo for the Sunday races.) A crew of us made our way through the rows of vendors with pit stops at PRO Compression, Sparkle Athletic and a few other brands before calling it a day and going our separate ways. Although we would have loved hanging out until the wee-hours of the night, we knew the alarms would start early the next morning so wanted to be "smart".

When we got back to the hotel I laid out my #FlatCarlee and double checked to make sure I had everything I needed.

My #FlatCarlee included: Mermaid PRO socks, pink Handful bra, turquoise Sparkle Athletic skirt, pink tank from TJ Maxx, elite
Road ID
, Be Awesome Sparkle Athletic trucker, blue and pink QALO silicone wedding bands, blue and pink Momentum Jewelry wraps,
Nathan handheld, Knockaround sunnies, PROBAR BOLT chews, Garmin Fenix 5S, and Brooks Ghost 10 (with pink Shwings).

A little behind the scenes... Yes I do take the lampshades off and move everything around the room ;)

If you follow me on Instagram, you may remember while I was reading at the pool on Friday, I got stung by a bee! (I don't blame the bee - he landed on my pinkie toe and I wasn't paying attention so used my other foot to knock off whatever was tickling my toe and smashed him into me... even still, I got stung and the bee died - #LoseLose!) Let's just say that beyond my normal lack of sleep due to my fibromyalgia and the anxiety of potentially sleeping through my race morning alarms, the insane itching of my sting did not allow for much rest. I was up by 2:15am trying not to scratch my toe off my foot...

The game plan was to meet Brian, David and Richard outside my hotel at 4:45am and make our way to the start. It was about a mile and a half walk and we wanted to get there around 5:20am since we had another #WeRunSocial meet-up.

We timed it perfectly and strolled up right as folks were starting to congregate. It was great seeing everyone. We had an AWESOME turn out - and the majority of folks were rocking the Mermaid PRO socks we deemed the "official" sock.

#RunnersMakeTheBestFriends

The crew rolls deep in SD!

Both the half and the full were starting at the same time (which is different from what it had been in recent years - in years past, the full started 45-60 minutes earlier than the half). The start time creeped up on us quickly and the crew had to disperse and make it to their appropriate corrals (although, truth be told, there's no regulating the Rock 'N' Roll corrals so people can go wherever they want). A group of us jumped in the back of the second corral and got ready to rock 'n' roll.

Ready to get this party started!

If you haven't read my past recaps or don't know much about Rock 'N' Roll San Diego, I'll let you in on a little secret and say this race is a party from beginning to end! I've run a few Rock 'N' Roll events (Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix) and SD is by far the one where I think the community really rallies behind its runners. The neighborhoods totally come out in full force to celebrate the event (and just celebrate). With the said, the only goal we had for the race was to soak up the moment, take all the photos, make all the character stops and LIVE IT UP!

"BUNNY CHARACTER STOP!"

Beer and donuts before 8am?! YUP!

Spectators ROCK!

More donuts?! YES PLEASE!

Rockin' out with the spectators!

We weren't sure how big of a crew we would have with us (Brian let the PRO ambassadors know that he, David, Richard and I were planning to run together at an average pace of around 10 minutes per mile {including our stops} and invited anyone who wanted to join in the fun). Surprisingly we had quite a decent sized group for the majority of the race (folks would join for a few miles here and there so it was fun to see the group change throughout the course).

We may have had to ask what "characters" these were... Apparently it was Dr. Strange ;)

You don't have to tell me twice! :)

Oh yeah, and then I got to run with Des for a few seconds! I even told her about the tequila stop she sadly missed ;)

"Michael Jackson and Prince posters?! Let's go snap a picture!"

"Hey Mr. Cow. Can I take a photo with you?"

Let's just say when you're fueling with Fireball and donut holes you know you are doing something right! BIG PROPS to the spectators keeping the runners "hydrated" and fed ;) The "Mile 4.5 Bar" is definitely one of my FAVE stops of the race!

These people are not messing around! Bloody Mary, Mimosa, Fireball, Tequila, Light Beer, etc!

Fireball is my JAM!

And then the bartenders offered to take a picture for us ;)

Because why not?!

Since I used to live down in San Diego (I graduated from the University of Michigan in 2006 and 4 days later had moved to SD with two suitcases, a summer internship at the University of San Diego and a love for sunshine), I love running through the area. I used to live in Normal Heights, so it holds a special place in my heart, but it's all pretty special!

The hubby was planning on getting in a couple miles while we were running the race and ended up meeting us around Mile 11. (I texted him throughout the race with updates on our pace so he could sleep in as long as possible.) It was great getting to see him for a few seconds (he ended up running parallel to the course and meeting us at the finish line).

Love that the hubby wanted to run on his own to still get in his miles!

Just like with everything in life, eventually the fun had to come to an end (especially since it was starting to heat up once the sun burned off the clouds of "June Gloom"). We ended up finishing around 2:30 - which I was calling "Party Pace". I hope this didn't offend anyone. I in no way meant that our finish time was something to scoff at - I know folks would love to have that time! I simply was looking for a way to describe the fun we were having throughout the 13.1 miles!

So Richard's Garmin was just PERFECTLY placed in this picture to make it look like I have a Super Mario Brothers mustache!

It's not about the time on the clock, but the time spent together!

We were able to run with David for the first 6.5 miles and then Paula the second 6.5 because they did
a half marathon relay team! These two are some of my FAVE people!

Another run done with THE Pavement Runner!

As we were walking through the finisher chute, Brian mentioned it didn't feel secure. (After the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 many race directors have done their part to make their events feel as safe as possible. Last year, at Rock 'N' Roll Las Vegas, which occurred after the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival shooting, there was a major police presence with snipers all over the course.) So when we were at brunch and started getting texts about an active shooter near the finish line our hearts sank. Thankfully the hubby and I have a great friend in the SDPD we quickly texted to get the accurate details. (The race was not the target of the event, but happened to be in the area, so approximately 4,900 runners were diverted from the course to a safe zone until first responders were able to contain the situation and give the "all clear".) Even though all the runners were safe, it's still a super scary feeling to hear the words "active shooter" in association with an event you were at and still have friends participating in. I'm thankful the incident was not directed at the race, but it's an ever present reminder of the realities we deal with today. [I'm not going to get political, but would love if you'd read my post from last week titled "Run to Save Lives". Crazy that June 2 was National Gun Violence Awareness Day...] I am so relieved the race (and day) wasn't tarnished with another senseless act of violence and everyone was kept safe!

Rock 'N' Roll San Diego 5K Race Recap

Saturday was the Rock 'N' Roll San Diego 5K! Let's just say the memories will definitely go down in the history books!

Me and the man, the myth, the legend - MEB!

Yup, as you can see from the above photo, the race was sort of a big deal (with sightings and photo ops with both Meb Keflezighi and Desi Linden)... but as always, I'm getting ahead of myself so let's get back to the beginning!

San Diego is one of the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon Series' largest events (probably because it's San Diego for goodness sake ;) and the fact that it was the location of their first race over 20 years ago). It is also home to PRO Compression (or at least Carlsbad is, which is in North County San Diego). With those two little details, the PRO Compression ambassadors, along with the #WeRunSocial crew, tend to make this one of the biggest and baddest parties of the year! Let's just say it includes all the matching socks, selfies, hugs, meet-ups, smiles, group photos, etc. Definitely one you do not want to miss!

The 5K is the kick-off for the Rock 'N' Roll weekend in San Diego. In years past I've run the Fontana Half Marathon, which takes place at the same time as this race, so normally miss the 5K, but was stoked to be able to run it this year. {FYI - Because I'm a part of the #RockNBlog team I was comped an entry to the race, but you better believe I'll #KeepItReal!}

Since the PRO Compression crew doesn't mess around (actually, let me clarify... we're definitely a crazy group, but when it comes to our socks it's serious business ;)), we decided the "official" sock for the 5K would be the recently released Utah Sunset socks. And once the socks are decided you can start building your race outfit around them ;) #Priorities

This is what a #FlatCarlee looks like when it is based solely around a pair of socks ;) And also make sure to #WearOrange!
Utah Sunset PRO Compression socks, yellow Handful bra, white Sparkle Athletic skirt, Delicious Tank from Graced by Grit, white and
black QALO silicone
wedding bands, yellow and orange Momentum Jewelry wraps, elite RoadID, She Can & She Did tubular bandana,
my Garmin Fenix 5S, and Brooks Ghost 10 (with reflective Shwings).

The game plan was for the hubby and I to drive down to San Diego Saturday morning for the 5K and then stay down till Sunday afternoon (after the half marathon, lunch, etc). The race was scheduled to start at 7am, but because we were having a #WeRunSocial meet-up at 6:20am, it called for an early morning. Rock 'N' Roll offered free parking, but it was about a mile from the race so you also had to account for the walk (and having to pick-up bibs at the Solutions tent).

Up by 3:31am, leave by 4:45am, be to parking lot by 5:30am,
be to the race start by 5:45am, meet up with friends pre-meet-up
around 6am, meet-up at 6:20am, photo at 6:33am, race at 7:15am.

Like I mentioned, we were planning on a meet-up and group photo before the 5K (and also before the Half/ Full Marathon on Sunday morning). A ton of people come out, so it's always a great time to catch up, hang out and chat it up.

This meet-up was no exception and we had a great turn out (especially since the 5K isn't the main event of the weekend).

Pre-meet-up photos are a MUST!

The hubby is such a great sport while he plays my personal photographer!

I didn't want to say it... but we may be the three best friends anyone could ever have ;)

Can you believe it?! I was actually in the air at the "right" time! There's a first time for everything!

These three guys are ROCKSTARS!

Eventually it was time to get in our corrals and start running. Brian, David and I decided to take the 5K as a shake-out run for the following morning's half marathon. We figured we'd shoot for 9-10 minute miles (with a buffer for photo stops).

Love that Dave was able to grab this shot of David, Brian and I

Apparently Brian didn't get the memo that David and I did... Run like crazies and have the hubby document it ;)

Other than photos with friends along the course (and stops to chat with the hubby for a few seconds), there weren't any character stops... And that is saying something because I can turn pretty much anything into a character stop ;) So, I'm gonna say it - this course is pretty boring. You are running around Balboa Park, which is great, but you're sort of on the outskirts of it so you don't really get to see any of the museums or historical buildings. I do appreciate the out and back portions because you have the opportunity to cheer on fellow runners - but for the most part it's a pretty lame course.

But all was made right in the world when I crossed the finish line and Des Linden (you know... the female WINNER of the 2018 Boston Marathon!) was there! HECK TO THE YES! I nervously asked if I could snap a photo with her. She kindly agreed and even mentioned my "awesome Michigan tattoo" (she lives near some of the hubby's family in Rochester).

Please ignore 1-800-Toilets... It doesn't really matter what the background is... IT'S DES!

After fangirling out for a moment I was able to compose myself enough to grab my medal and snacks (we got a mini water, banana, and cheez-its). And while hanging out, waiting for more of the crew to finish I saw it... My first character of the race - a BANANA! 5Ks are a great distance to dress in costume, but unfortunately there were very few festive folks.

And, yes, his mom did give me a banana to hold as a prop for the photo!

Eventually it was time to head out for food, so the hubby and I started making our way to the car. On the walk I saw Meb just hanging out. I decided I'd see if he wouldn't mind snapping a picture with me and, of course, he said it was fine. (He is legit one of the nicest runners I have ever "met". He and his family live in San Diego and if you ever see him out running he is always good for a thumbs up, a "great job" or even a selfie! He even comes to some local races to spectate!)

Yup... It's such a good picture I will share it TWICE in this post!

Before making it to the car I decided I wanted to stop by the Botanical Building (which was featured on the medal) for a quick photo. I don't want to toot my own horn (toot toot), but I loved the way this #MedalMonday shot turned out!

So, to recap, seeing as I was comped an entry to this race and saw (and got my photo with) two running SUPERSTARS I can't be too mad with the way the morning went. For me, races are definitely about the community - and the community was ABSO-FROGGING-LUTELY out in full force for this one. But, if you are the type of person looking for an entertaining run, a flat/ fast course, or a ton of fanfare, this is one you may want to save your hard earned cash on.

We were pretty spot on with our pacing!

Who is the coolest runner you've ever taken a photo with?

Friday Favorites

It's FRIDAY! And not just ANY Friday, but the Friday of Rock 'N' Roll San Diego! This weekend is gonna be FULL of fun, but before we can get to any of it I'm gonna share some of the things I have been digging lately (because hopefully you may love them too). So, without further ado (since I still have to pack for this weekend's epic adventure)...

Cotopaxi

I found this brand thanks to Jennifer (@jbirdruns) - although I doubt my wallet will be thanking her ;). She recently got one of their windbreakers and as soon as I saw the color-ways I was IN LOVE! Then I went to their website and found out that not only is their gear AMAZING but they also give back! OH HECK TO THE YES! They designate 2% of their revenue to help alleviate poverty around the world. Cotopaxi funds solutions that address the most persistent needs of those living in extreme poverty. Giving is core to their model. As if I needed another reason to love their innovative outdoor products...

1: Teca Windbreaker (Full-Zip) in Festival / 2: Do Good Hoodie /
3. Teca Windbreaker (Half-Zip) in Popsicle / 4. Libre Sweater / 5. Taal Convertible Tote

Green Salsa

If you've been around my neck of the InterWebs for any length of time you probably have picked up on my love for Mexican food (specifically chips and salsa) - thankfully it is plentiful in SoCal! Well, I don't know when the change exactly occurred, but recently I have been loving green salsa more than my standard go-to red salsa. Now I still prefer red salsa for my chips, but when dipping my burrito or quesadilla in salsa I've been reaching for the green lately. So weird (because I have never been a huge green salsa fan), but so good! I wonder what other tastes will or have changed ;)

All or Nothing: The Michigan Wolverines

Oh, I sure hope you know my love for the Michigan Wolverines runs deep (I mean, I bleed maize and blue), so when the hubby told me about an Amazon series that followed the football team around last year we HAD TO watch it! Since we have Amazon Prime we are able to watch the series for free (but my love for my alma mater runs so deep that I probably would have paid for it). There are 8 episodes (ranging from 35-50 minutes a show) and I would HIGHLY recommend it. I am probably bias, but it is still a great series even if you aren't a HUGE fan of Michigan Football. I particularly loved seeing Ann Arbor and the campus, but seeing all of the "behind the scenes" and real life of the athletes was pretty awesome too!

November Project Charity

I was STOKED to read that November Project was adding a nonprofit component to their amazing organization. They aim to use the spirit of NP to host their first community outreach plan that aims specifically at youth. They believe that the NP rulebook for accountability, human connection, intense fitness, and support for all fitness levels could make an even larger impact if they use these tools to train a younger generation, creating healthy habits from an early age. I can't wait to follow along on this new part of their journey! (PS If you want to read the original announcement you can find it HERE.)

Planters NUT-rition Energy Nut Mix

Last week while I was grocery shopping a few of the nut mixes were on sale so I snagged some (since I love me some nuts ;)). Now I will preface this favorite by saying normally when I buy nuts I buy them unsalted/ raw, so I realize that this Planters NUT-rition Energy Mix is chocked full of sugars/ salts/ extras don't make them the healthiest, but in comparison to say chips or candy they are a great alternative (healthy fat FTW!). I grabbed a couple of the canisters last week and I think we are down to our last one right now. Next time I grab groceries I'll have to check to see if they have any more!
