Group: Californians Unknowingly Supporting Puppy Mills
Humane Society Of United States Says Californians Bought Nearly 9K Puppies From Mills In 2009
The Humane Society of the United States said California residents bought nearly 9,000 puppies from the puppy mill capitol of the U.S. last year.
According to state-issued health certificates sent to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, nearly 9,000 puppies were shipped from Missouri brokers and breeders between January 2009 and December 2009 to California. They were shipped to pet stores or directly to pet owners responding to Internet or newspaper advertisements. A conservative estimate of the retail value of these dogs approaches $9 million.
The data suggests two-thirds of the puppies were shipped to Southern California, with 763 puppies ending up in San Diego County.
