Since I won't be on a computer tomorrow I wanted to take today to wish my mom a HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY!! WHOO HOO!!



I'm not going to get all gushy or anything like that (seeing as she won't read it till next week), but just wanted to give everyone else a heads up that if you see Ms. Suzie Q, make sure to wish her a HAP-HAP-HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! (And make sure to say it slowly and loudly, seeing as she is turning 50 she may be losing her hearing :) ).

Penguins, Wings prepare for improbable Game 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings are playing a game they didn't want to play, in a city where they don't want to be, against a growing-confident Pittsburgh Penguins team they were certain would be long gone by now.

Such are the perils of the Stanley Cup finals where, as the Red Wings discovered during a riveting but heartbreaking Game 5, no lead is truly safe and no team is safely eliminated until the final horn sounds.

Fifty-eight minutes won't do it. Neither will 59 1/2 minutes, as the Red Wings were reminded during their history-making 4-3, triple-overtime loss Monday night that cut their lead to 3-2 and sent the series back to Pittsburgh for Game 6 on Wednesday night.

The Stanley Cup was unpacked and spiffed up, so close the Red Wings could touch it. Only they couldn't after Pittsburgh's Max Talbot tied it with only 34.3 seconds remaining and Petr Sykora won it in the third overtime, giving the Penguins new life in a finals that appeared over.

"Afterward, you realize we did have a great chance to win it. But we didn't," Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "So that's it. You have to put that behind you and move on."

Still, the disappointment was tangible. No NHL team has gone so deep into an elimination game with a lead only to have it yanked away, teased and tempted by the Cup before having it stowed for another night.

California high court clears way for same-sex marriages to start June 17

The California Supreme Court today rejected a bid to freeze last month's ruling legalizing gay marriage, paving the way for same-sex couples to begin walking down the aisle as soon as June 17.

Moving swiftly to remove legal uncertainty, the court turned away a request from gay marriage foes to stay the ruling until after the November election, when voters will consider a ballot measure that would change the state Constitution to again outlaw same-sex weddings. The secretary of state earlier this week qualified the initiative for the November ballot.

The justices were divided 4-3 on whether to rehear their earlier decision, the same split that unfolded when the gay marriage case was decided in May. Conservative organizations, joined by 11 other states, asked the court to reopen the case, a move opposed by civil rights groups, San Francisco city officials and Attorney General Jerry Brown.

The Supreme Court found California's ban on same-sex weddings unconstitutional in a 4-3 ruling that reverberated across the country. Since that time, state officials have created new marriage licenses and announced that they would be prepared to handle gay marriages on June 17, the day after the Supreme Court's ruling becomes final.

Rentals

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but this past weekend Ryan and I rented a couple movies (I normally get a rent one, get one free coupon at least once a month). We got Numb and Lars and The Real Girl.

We watched Numb first. It was about a chronically depressed screenwriter desperately trying to cure his condition when he meets the girl of his dreams. It was a good movie. They do say the "F word" in it quite a bit, but overall I thought it was a good flick (It has Matthew Perry in it and I really like him as an actor).

Than we watched Lars and The Real Girl. I really liked it. Not only do I find Ryan Gosling very attractive (it doens't hurt to watch him for 2 hours), but it was a super good movie. It really showed what it would be like to have a community love you unconditionally. It is about a delusional young guy that strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet. I would definitely recommend it!
