REVIEW: Quest Chocolate Sprinkled Doughnut Protein Bar

Every few weeks I get a surprise delivery at my door from Quest Nutrition. I'm never sure what to expect when I open the package - sometimes it's a case of protein cookies, other times it's a box of protein chips and once it was even coupons for protein pizza! This recent parcel caught my attention right away because pink boxes mean only ONE thing... DONUTS!

Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you, Quest just released a Chocolate Sprinkled Doughnut bar. Even Walt was intrigued!

Don't worry, I didn't give him one... because it had chocolate on it... not because it was too tasty to share, right?! ;)

With so many options already available in Quest Nutrition’s flagship protein bar it’s no surprise the latest addition to the collection isn’t a traditional flavor. Although it might not be your standard protein bar flavor, the macros in the bar are on par with the rest of their line. Each bar contains 20g of complete dairy-based protein along with 23g of carbohydrates (4 net carbs), 8g of fat, less than a gram of sugar and a total of 190 calories. Compared to a standard Chocolate Frosted Sprinkle Doughnut that has 3g of protein, 34g of carbs, 16g of fat, 14g of sugar and 290 calories, the Quest bar definitely comes out on top nutritionally. But the real (and much more important) question is taste, right?!

I'm not sure, but I was expecting it to be a chocolate bar (and since chocolate isn't necessarily my jam, I figured this bar wouldn't be for me). Let's me real, I'm a purist when it comes to donuts - sticking with the standard glazed being my favorite. Surprisingly (or I guess more like the doughnut in question) it's a "vanilla cake" base that's coated in chocolate and then covered with sprinkles. It reminded me of the Birthday Cake protein bar Quest released a few months back

Like I mentioned, I figured I'd be giving these all to the hubby so I was actually pleasantly surprised when I liked the bar. I wouldn't say it is my favorite flavor (I still think I am partial to the S'mores and Cookies & Cream), but I didn't hate it. It's a sweet treat that is healthier than the actual doughnut (and has some extra protein to keep you tackling your day ahead).

Side Note: I didn't love the "you deserve a doughnut" slogan. It made me feel like if I were to partake in a doughnut (which I absolutely do on occasion) that I should feel guilty (the language that we use can turn into our inner dialog so we need to be cautious with the words we use). We shouldn't need to "earn" the food that we eat. Don't get me wrong, I see food as fuel and often if you fuel with crap you will feel like crap, but that still doesn't mean you can't have a treat from time to time without having to "deserve" it... Unless by "deserve" they meant because I was living and breathing I deserve to eat whatever the heck I want to eat, then, shoot, go ahead and scream that sentiment from the mountain tops.

Is it gluten free? It sounds fabulous otherwise, but if gluten is there, no dice for me.
