Toasty

It is quite toasty outside. Our office has been HOT for about 10 days now. The AC is broken. I have checked the thermostat the last few days and it doesn't dip below about 82 (even at 5:45am in the morning with all the windows and doors open). Then coming home to a hot house, doing laundry and cooking dinner is just not too fun.

I know, I know... What a whiner I am, huh? I'm not trying to complain, just letting you know how I feel. I think my body has just become too accustomed to 70 and sunny (not 95 and steamy).

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez, others sued over Va. condo deal

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez owes $3.9 million from a defaulted loan intended for a planned condominium project near the football stadium at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., according to a federal lawsuit.
The suit, which Nexity Bank filed against Rodriguez on Aug. 13, alleges that the coach and four partners defaulted on a construction loan in May. Interest on the loan continues to accrue at nearly $1,000 a day, the suit claims.

News of the suit comes during a difficult week for Rodriguez. On Monday, the coach offered a emotional defense of his program following a Free Press report Sunday in which current and former Michigan players said the team exceeded NCAA limits on practice time and other activities.

One More Month

Dear Friends & Family:

A life is lost to suicide every 16 minutes in the United States. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty-four year olds and the second leading cause of death among college students. However, most Americans remain unaware that suicide is a national health problem. The impact suicide has on the lives of family members, friends, co-workers and the community is devastating. The loss of human potential is enormous.

On October 17th, 2009, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host its fourth, annual 5K Out of the Darkness Community Walk in San Diego, CA. We hope you will consider walking with us as we travel the beautiful paths at De Anza Cove in North Mission Bay to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention.

A major goal of this event is to show support for the families and friends of the 32,000 Americans who die by suicide, and the 20 million people who suffer from depression, each year. Support of the community walks also helps to raise funds for suicide prevention research and educational programs, erase the stigma surrounding suicide and its causes, and encourage those who are suffering from mental illness to see treatment.

On-line registration is now available at www.outofthedarkness.org. You may register individually or as part of a team. Please consider inviting your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to walk with you or to support your walk. If you are not able to join us, perhaps you would consider sponsoring a walker or making a donation to the San Diego walk. Check out my personal walker page here: http://afsp.donordrive.com/participant/mcdot.

Thank you ahead of time for your support in bringing suicide Out of the Darkness.

Sincerely,
Carlee

Bug Attacks

Ryan and I were just talking about how I get eaten by bugs ALL THE TIME. This may be one reason :)

Mosquito Bites: The Real Reason Some Are Immune

If you're one of those people whom mosquitoes tend to favor, maybe it's because you aren't sufficiently stressed-out.

Insects have very keen powers of smell that direct them to their targets. But for researchers trying to figure out what attracts or repels the pests, sorting through the 300 to 400 distinct chemical odors that the human body produces has proved daunting.

Now scientists at Rothamsted Research in the U.K. have been making headway at understanding why some people can end up with dozens of bites after a backyard barbecue, while others remain unscathed. The researchers have identified a handful of the body's chemical odors—some of which may be related to stress—that are present in significantly larger concentrations in people that the bugs are happier to leave alone. If efforts to synthesize these particular chemicals are successful, the result could be an all-natural mosquito repellent that is more effective and safer than products currently available.
