Walt Disney World 10K Race Recap

This morning I ran the Walt Disney World 10K as part of the Dopey Challenge (race number two out of four for the weekend).

Flat Carlee!
I asked Ryan what color socks I should wear and he picked orange :)

Originally my hubby had signed up to run the race with me. Unfortunately (for me) about 2 months ago he found out he would need to go to Canada for a photo shoot with work this same week and would therefore miss it (and the vacation with my parents) - BUMMER-RUSKI! Thankfully my BRF (Best Running Friend), Megan, and her hubby were running it so they said I could tag along (no shame in the third wheel game).

Although the wind wasn’t as strong as during yesterday’s 5K, the temperatures still hadn’t warmed up a ton (not to mention the race started at 5:30am instead of 6:15am like the previous day). While waiting for the race to start I kept my Brooks running jacket and a Mylar blanket for my legs. I know, I know, I am originally from Michigan and I should be like Elsa (the cold never bothered her anyway), but because I have lived in Southern California for the last 8 years my blood has thinned and 43* is a little nippy.

Jen, Megan and I trying to stay warm

Oh yeah, and how can I forget about the socks I bought at the Dollar Store yesterday and turned into arm warmers?! Except for the heel portion looking like a gizzard of a turkey they worked out SUPER (I think I might even wear them for tomorrow’s half marathon depending on the temperatures in the morning). [By the way, I think the Dollar Store has been our second home this weekend ;) ]

I cut the tips of the socks off for my fingers and a little slit for my thumb

Thankfully the rain held off until after we got home

Since my parents weren’t running this race with me (they only wanted to run the 5K, but maybe one day I’ll be able to get them into a longer distance race with me!), I knew I could throw them my jacket once I saw them about a quarter mile after we crossed the starting line. I did keep the Mylar blanket for the first mile or so to help warm me up, but threw it aside once I was a little more comfortable.

A couple blurry pictures from near the start

Megan and Brent (running so fast they were blurry!)

And one last speed shot!

[BY THE WAY - A HUGE THANKS TO MY PARENTS FOR BEING SPECTATORS ALL WEEKEND, I KNOW HOW HARD IT CAN BE {who am I kidding, I don't regularly spectate} I TRULY APPRECIATE IT!]

Megan and Brent had been training with the run/ walk method that the one and only Jeff Galloway teaches. Their intervals are 2 minutes of running and 30 seconds of walking. I had never technically done legit run/ walk intervals (my mom and I did some “non-structured” intervals yesterday for the 5K, i.e. run when she could breath, walk when she couldn’t ;) ). I was excited to see how it would work out (especially since I will be running with Megan and my running coach and friend, Krissy, for the marathon and we would be using the same intervals).

We ran through the first couple of designated walk breaks, but that was mostly to try and get through the hoards of people (since this was Brent’s first 10K {YAY for an automatic PR} he had to estimate his finish time, which landed him in Corral C, so Megan and I moved back with him). The course started the same route as the 5K did the day before, so I was pretty familiar with where we were headed.

Once we broke out of the first big group we started listening to Megan’s watch for our walk signals. On the first overpass we ran under we saw Anna and Elsa up top. The Disney magic even had it SNOWING! (Since they were on the road above us I don’t know for sure, but would assume it is similar to when they make it snow at Disneyland during the holiday fireworks {a type of foam bubble that floats in the air and even smells like cinnamon}.}

We did a bit more running outside of the Epcot today than yesterday, but that makes sense because they have to double the mileage and the easiest place to do that is out on the roads, rather than winding through the parks. While we were out on the streets we saw Lilo & Stitch. In the backlot of Epcot we saw some Mardi Gras dancers on stilts. When we entered Epcot we saw Mushu in China. We also came across Chip & Dale, Genie, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, and some cool Mike Wazowski & Sebastian that lit up. (I saw on Instagram there was a sporty Mickey Mouse and the White Rabbit but I didn’t see them while we were on the course.)

Since we were cruising along and had found our rhythm with the intervals we didn’t stop for any pictures. We did see Sarah and Ty while on the course (I swear I need to get better with middle-run selfies like Dani from Weight Off My Shoulders

Megan and I haven’t run together since my first half marathon (the 2012 Disneyland Half), so it was great getting to chat along while we ran. Having someone to chat with (and all of the entertainment Disney provides of course) just makes the time fly by! Before we knew it we were passing by the Spaceship Earth again and heading towards the finish line.

Spaceship Earth

As we were coming down the stretch we heard them announce “Is that an engagement?”, so I knew everyone would be focused on the couple that had just gotten engaged. I had to shout at my parents as we ran by to get their attention. My dad was able to grab a couple pictures of us making our way towards the finish line. (They do have bleachers set up for spectators, but I believe they are for the folks that purchase the chEAR squad packages.)

I hope she said YES!

Here I come!

Thumbs up! WE DID IT!

We are almost done!

The force is still strong with us!

Heading towards the home stretch!

There we go!

The force was strong with us! We crossed the finish line with smiles on our faces and Brent become a 10K finisher! I was able to grab a couple pictures of Brent and Megan receiving their medals and then we saw my parents along the fence.

Brent getting his first 10K medal!

He looks thrilled, huh?!

Megan was stoked to be done!

It's all about the bling!

Megan got us matching shirts! LOVE THEM AND HER!

We did it!!

Hold your medals!

We made our way through the finisher area, grabbed our goodie boxes, and took our “official” finisher pictures.

Finishers!

Just like yesterday, I had to walk through the Dopey tent on the way out, but I didn’t see anything special about it… Not sure if they change this for the half and full, but as far as I could see, it was just a way to send folks to different photographer lines.

We met back up with my parents and I had to grab one last picture with my spectators before we made our way to the car. (Although we warmed up by mile 1 or 1.5, once we stopped running we got pretty chilly pretty quickly and they didn’t give out any heat blankets so I was glad my parents still had my coat.)

Me and my cold spectators!

The Minnie medal is super cute and I might even wear the shirt from the race (it fits and is cute) before I start hoarding collecting shirts for my next tshirt blanket [Project Repat link]. PS I love how the shirts have the parks that the race went through on the sleeve! Sometimes it is the details that really make me happy :)

The medal and finisher shirt!

**FYI - I AM BUYING THE MARATHONFOTO DOPEY PACKAGE, WHICH WILL INCLUDE ALL OF MY "PROFESSIONAL" PICTURES THE PHOTOGRAPHERS TOOK. ONCE ALL OF THE PICTURES ARE CATEGORIZED AND ASSIGNED I WILL GET THE PICS AND ADD THEM TO THIS POST.**

Have you ever run a 10K before? If so, what was your first?

Walt Disney World 5K Race Recap

This morning I ran the Walt Disney World 5K with my parents. It was race number one of four in my quest for the Dopey Challenge

Flat Carlee

Yesterday afternoon my weather app sent me a notice… WIND CHILL ADVISORY! Thankfully when I was getting ready to head to Orlando I tried to pack for “everything” and threw in my Brooks running tights (they would come in handy this morning)! We also went to Target yesterday and grabbed a couple pairs of the $1 gloves - LIFE SAVERS!

My alarm was set for 4am EST (yep, that means when I checked my Instagram thread folks were just going to bed in California… my Garmin was still on PST… 1am - OUCH!). The temperature at the condo was around 43* when I woke up - not too bad… UNTIL WE WENT OUTSIDE! The wind was CRAY-CRAY!

It only took us about 15 minutes to get from the condo to the parking lot at Epcot. We got over there around 5:20 and decided to sit in the car until about 5:40am (conserve as much heat as possible and watch some of the costumes head towards the starting area).

We finally got out of the car and thought “Well, at least it isn’t 1* like it was in Temperance” (where my parents had come from). It didn’t feel too bad until the wind started howling. Thankfully in my luggage I also brought 3 Mylar blankets and 4 garbage bags (Megan sent the garbage bags in my Dopey Survival Pack). I ended up wearing one of my Mylar blankets for the first mile and a half of the race.

I have the BEST BRF (Best Running Friend) in THE WORLD!

After we got out of the car, we made our way towards the starting line. We had to go through a couple security lines (since I had a runner’s belt they had me go through the bag check line, even though it only had 2 cough drops in it ;)). I was originally assigned to Corral A, but since my parents were in C I moved back to start with them. Once we got to the corrals we shimmied up to the front and waited for some more folks to file in to help block the wind behind us.

Mom, Dad, and I in Corral C.

Dad took a couple pictures in the corral (people packed in)

Another shot of the cattle call.

My mom’s breathing has been rough lately (she is still going to different specialists to see what the crap is up), so we were planning on speed walking it. My dad didn’t want to hang with us, so he left us in his dust and ran the whole way. Although my mom wasn’t expecting to run, due to the weather and since we were chilly she wanted to jog a bit to try and warm up.

We ended up running for the first half mile or so (all in the Epcot parking lot). Mom needed a walk break around the area where you have to walk to the corrals for the half marathon (back in the wooded path area). That was where we saw the first character - Flick (we didn’t stop for any of the characters because we weren’t sure how much extra time we had with our walk breaks).

After our first walk break we ran again until we reached Epcot park (rather than running in the parking lot or backlot). I was looking forward to going into the park, not only because of the magic that comes along with the Disney parks, but I thought the walls might divert the wind a bit (no such luck). Mom and I grabbed a quick selfie with Spaceship Earth in the background during our next walk break.

Please ignore my crazy eyes ;)

Around that time is where we saw Daisy. She was the first character in the parks, and since we were in Corral C and took a couple walk breaks the line was probably 25 people long or so - not too bad. I saw a couple people struggling to take selfies, so I stopped and took their pictures for them and then ran to catch up with mom.

One bummer part was the music… Although the cold never bothered Elsa, it seemed to make the CDs continue to skip. At one point I even called out “REMIX” when “Let It Go” continued to skip when we were inside of Epcot. (Maybe they were working out the kinks for the following races, but it seemed like most of the songs we heard started skipping by the middle of the song.)

We saw Chip and Dale in Japan, Pinocchio in Germany, and Donald in Canada. All of the lines seemed to be 20-30 people long and from what I saw they were moving pretty quickly. After about mile 2 or so I didn’t notice any additional characters (but then again, since we weren’t planning on stopping, there could have been some that we missed).

Obviously once we got closer to the Spaceship Earth we needed another selfie! We pulled over to the side (PLEASE MAKE SURE TO LOOK AROUND YOU OR RAISE YOUR HAND TO NOTIFY THOSE AROUND YOU IF YOU ARE STOPPING…) and grabbed another picture.

SMILE!

Spaceship Earth

After another walk break we saw the Mile 3 sign and decided to run to the finish. We were able to cross the finish line under 45 minutes, which was great (since I had to keep a 16 minute pace for the Dopey Challenge). I would say we probably ended up running at least half the race, which was more than I was expecting - MY MOM IS A ROCKSTAR!

I think Mile 1 was 13:13 and Mile 2 & 3 were closer to 14:30 with our selfie stops

We were able to grab our medallions (they don’t call them medals for the 5K since they are plastic, but I still love them) and make our way through the finishing area. I was even able to grab a picture of mom getting her medallion!

My mom is such a RUNNING ROCKSTAR (she hasn't run since this summer)!

Before we got to the photographers we caught back up with my dad. He finished in 32:41 - SPEED DEMON!! We were able to get a finishing picture together - YAY! After we grabbed our official picture, there was an extra backdrop and a volunteer nearby so I asked the gentleman if he would take our photo (the voluntEARS are always sooooooo sweet!).

Then I had to go through the Dopey tent… I am still sort of confused on the whole thing. They aren’t giving us bracelets to confirm we finished the races this year, something with picture proof… As long as I get my Dopey medals, I guess that is all I really care about (technology is great… as long as it works).

We didn’t hang around too long. Actually we didn’t hang around at all. We grabbed our goodies, medal, and finishing picture and made our way to the car. Although the sun was out, the temperatures were still chilly (my fingers felt FROZEN, even with the gloves we picked up yesterday). Again, I think I would have been fine, but the wind just didn’t let up. And like the announcers at the beginning of the race mentioned, the wind swirled the whole race so we were ALWAYS running into it.

I don't know that I would necessarily ever sign up for a Disney 5K on its own (mostly due to the congestion and cost), but as part of a challenge I definitely love them. And what I love MOST is being able to enjoy it with my parents!! THEY ROCK MY SOCKS!!

The finisher medallion and participant shirt!

Workout Recap - Week 53 / Week 1

Sunday, December 28th San Diego Holiday Half MarathonFoam Rolled & Stretched

Monday, December 29th –  5 mile (easy pace) run, Foam Rolled & Stretched

Tuesday, December 30th –  REST DAY (felt like I might be coming down with something, so wanted to beat it before it started), Foam Rolled & Stretched

Wednesday, December 31st –  4 mile (easy pace) run

Thursday, January 1st – 10.6 mile bike ride with the hubby

Friday, January 2nd – 10 mile (long run pace) run with friends, Foam Rolled & Stretched

Saturday, January 3rd – 8 mile (long run pace) run, Foam Rolled & Stretched

Not too shabby for a "taper" week :) 40.1 miles ran and 10.6 miles biked. The numbers are slightly off though seeing as the San Diego Holiday Half Marathon should have technically been counted as my long run for last week.

I head out on Tuesday for Walt Disney World to tackle my first set of races of the year - THE DOPEY CHALLENGE! The time in Florida will also be "Christmas" with my parents, so other than race recaps, I would probably expect fewer posts since I haven't seen them in a while!

How were your workouts this past week?
