Friday Favorites

WHOOO HOOOO! It's Friday (and St. Patrick's Day)... which is reason enough to celebrate, but even better is the fact that I'm sharing a couple of my FAVES with YOU! <<jumps for joy>>  So let's not delay the excitement any longer...

REI Trail Run Project App

I got an email from REI last week about this app but had heard about it first from my father-in-law. He was telling the hubby and I about the rock climbing app and this trail guide when he was out to visit. The hubby loves trail running (I am still trying to find my appreciation for it... I feel like I spend the majority of my time trying not fall that I don't have time to enjoy the run) but I still thought I'd download the app. So far it's pretty awesome. We've already used it (even if it was only for a hike with the pup) and are stoked to find more trails to explore!

Toms Birch Critter Shoes

My parents had given me a gift card to Marshall's / TJ Maxx for Christmas. It had been burning a hole in my pocket for the last 2+ months and this past weekend I was finally able to spend it! I was expecting to grab some new running gear, but when I walked in and saw THE CUTEST PAIR OF TOMS I knew right there that they had to be mine. (I normally wear a 6 in Toms, but the closest they had was a 5.5, so I decided I would make them work ;))

Rock 'N' Roll Vegas

So if you've been around these parts for long you probably have heard that the Rock 'N' Roll Las Vegas weekend is the PARTY to be at, right?! Well, registration for the marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K will be available on March 21st to those who sign up to be 'Strip at Night Insiders'. An access code will be delivered via email at 10am PST on 3/21, which will need to be entered on the website in order to open the registration link. Prices are available in limited supply and will increase as capacity levels are reached for any distance at any time. Don't say I didn't warn you... Get on the list, clear your calendar and start making plans for an EPIC weekend on the Strip!

Life Updates

I want to start off by apologizing. I feel like lately I have had nothing to say (yet a billion and a half things spinning in my head), so I've ignored the blog. I have felt like whatever I had to share didn't matter or was silly, so I didn't post anything.

Source

Sidebar: I've had people mention "you don't need to apologize", so I want to explain where I'm coming from. I realize that time is an extremely valuable commodity, one that we will never get back once it's gone. With that said, if you are going to take time out of your life to spend a few moments following along on my journey, then I should do my best to deliver. I don't want to let you down or leave you hanging. So, to the people who check in on the blog occasionally and have been disappointed by my lack of posts, I TRULY APOLOGIZE! I do not take you or your time for granted!

Okay, now that that's off my chest, let's get back to the meat veggies of the post - a quick life update.

Source

Life has been pretty chaotic lately. Remember the post from November where I shared some of the new opportunities that were coming the hubby's way? Well, let's just say things didn't work out how we expected. Ryan put in his two week notice with his current position last Monday and will be going full-time freelance at the beginning of next week.

I am super excited that he feels the confidence to strike it out on his own, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous. I've been a 1099-contractor for most of our marriage, but with him leaving the comforts of the corporate world behind we've got a lot more details on our plate (i.e. health insurance, tax write-offs, invoicing and tracking payment, etc).

He already has some awesome projects in the pipeline, and I'm super stoked to see him happy and excited about the creative side again. It's been hectic since he's been juggling them with his current job (twice this week he came home from his 9-5 to work till after 2AM) but I'm sure we will be able to get a handle on everything once he is solely freelance.

One of the many projects he has been working on is for a friend's fundraiser -
they wanted a unicorn doing yoga on some tees ;) Here's one of the sketches.

Oh, and a quick update on my broken body... A few weeks back my chiropractor thought maybe the issue I was having in my back might be a compression fracture since it hadn't gotten better (at that point it had been about 8 weeks). I finally saw my primary care physician a couple weeks ago and she said that thankfully it was not any type of fracture, but a thoracic strain. She said she knows how 'crazy' runners can get without running so fortunately I wouldn't have to stop (which was good to hear since I had just run a full marathon three days before seeing her), but that the only real course of action was 'wait'. I would say that it is 'getting better', but this whole hurry up and wait thing is not my jam.

Source

So now I think you're just about caught up (obviously there is more to life than just running and work, but those are two of the main components, right?!). Other than that I've been reading a ton (just finished book number thirty-one for the year), working a bit and daydreaming about upcoming adventures. But enough about me... what about YOU?!

How have you been lately?

Tapering for the Los Angeles Marathon

In case you didn't know, it's Los Angeles Marathon week!

No, I am NOT an elite, but because I'm an ambassador for the
race we were gifted some AWESOME ceremonial bibs!

I wanted I'd do a quick post on something that the majority of us Los Angeles Marathon runners are going through... TAPER TIME! {Feel free to read all about tapering in this Runner's World article (why it's helpful, how to do it, etc).}

Source

I figured I'd share some ideas of what you can do to fill your time during the taper (seeing as you will have more time on your hands since you will be running less). So, without further ado, and in no particular order, here are my suggestions of things to do while tapering for the Los Angeles Marathon (these ideas really work for any race, but since I've got this one on Sunday I figured I should be a little more race specific).

Download The App

Did you know that the Los Angeles Marathon has their own app powered by Fitbit? It contains some awesome resources - such as a course map, a list containing points of interest along the race, a runner tracker, a link to the weather, a camera that has custom borders for your Instagram posts and even music that you can use while running!

Source

Weather Stalking

Okay, so I know stressing about the weather does very little (seeing as Mother Nature is a beast that has very little regard for anyone else), but I still make sure to do my fair share of weather watching so I know how to plan for the race [i.e. do I need to bring extra hydration / should I pack a rain jacket or duct tape to help "weatherproof" my shoes / etc].

Yup, I added all of the different areas we pass through into my
weather app... Overkill? Maybe ;)

Updating Music Playlists

For those of you who listen to music, make sure to have your jams ready. Some of you may want to rock the same tunes as you used during training (that way when you hear those familiar songs your body 'knows' what to do) while others of you may want to update your playlist to contain a few extra motivational songs and anthem cries.

Foam Roll & Stretch

I do my darnedest to foam roll and stretch every evening (although there are some nights where I am just too tired and decide crawling into bed sounds much better), but when it comes to the week before a race you better believe that I am setting aside a chunk of time to roll it out (whether it be your IT band, your quads, your calves, your feet, etc). DO IT!

Review The Course

Knowing the course can have HUGE advantages (when to expect hills, where to be on the look out for aid stations, etc). Although I am one who tends to forget to do much studying of the course map or elevation charts, I know how beneficial they can be... so learn from my dumb tax mistakes and do your homework, one can never be too prepared!

Source

Source

Hydrate

No matter the weather, it is always important to hydrate prior to a race (starting a race dehydrated might be just as bad or worse than starting a race without having adequately trained for it). And hydrating shouldn't start the morning or even day before - make sure you give your body the nutrition and hydration it needs leading up to toeing the starting line!

Learn Snapchat

Okay, so this one may sound strange, but I promise there is a reason for it... The Los Angeles Marathon is teaming up with Snapchat to make social media history! On race day, the entire marathon course will be covered with 40+ geofilters. And for someone who thoroughly enjoys social media, I should probably check this platform out, right?!

Source

Charge Electronics

Who wants to show up on race morning with their gadgets and gizmos dead? Uh NO ONE! So while you have some extra time, make sure to grab the power cords and give your electronics {and spare external batteries} some extra juice. This reminds me, if you are traveling to the race, make sure the chargers find their way into your bags.

Decide On Race Outfit

I swear, sometimes deciding on my race day outfit is one of the hardest parts (okay, the mileage is definitely the hardest part, but picking my outfit may come in a close second). Now that you've versed yourself in what the weather will be like on race morning, get your gear ready. (I love taking #FlatRunner photos. Not only does it help your friends know what to look for when they are spectating, but it also helps you make sure you don't forget any last minute essentials.)

This is the "flat" runner my hubby did the night before his last
half marathon... It got a lot of chuckles that's for sure!

Max & Relax

You put in the work, now take a couple deep breaths, trust your training and RELAX! Whether that means taking a couple hours and reading one of your favorite running (or non-running) books, soaking in an Epsom salt bath to relax the muscles, vegging out on the couch to your favorite reality TV show, napping with your favorite four-legged friend, etc., just make sure you take time for YOU! You earned it after all those early mornings, hard workouts and long runs! Your body is physically prepared, now make sure you show up rested and mentally prepared to #ConqurLA!

Is there anything else you make sure to do during taper time?

REVIEW: Rip van Wafels

I was contacted a couple weeks back to see if I might be interested in checking out a new (to me) company, Rip van Wafels. I have tried a few similar waffles in the past (and have enjoyed them) so I thought I'd give these a try.

Source

Rip van Wafels is a snack company that was inspired by the traditional European stroopwafel to create the perfect snack consisting of a decadent, chewy filling sandwiched between two layers of thin crisp waffle. The result? A sophisticated, delicious and better-for-you treat.

Source

The mission of Rip van Wafels is to provide a healthier snack using only real, natural ingredients, without sacrificing taste. Their wafels are made from clean, simple, high quality ingredients and are low in sugar making them perfect as a quick bite at your desk, a boost after your workout, or as a fun addition to any meal (think of the amazing breakfast bowl you could create!). Tip: they’re also great with coffee. Starbucks has been a fan for a while and sells their wafels in almost every U.S. store!

Here’s a quick run-down on what makes these wafels so wonderful:
  • Rip van Wafels' unique European taste is not only delicious, but low in sugar (less than 8 grams) and only 130 calories.
  • All of their products are Non-GMO, and free of artificial flavors, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and trans fats.
  • It’s light weight, sleek packaging makes Rip van Wafels the perfect snack for on the go. Endurance athletes love them for a quick, great tasting, healthy boost!
  • The wafels are versatile – eat them as is, warmed up over coffee, or top them with yummy favorites like fruit, yogurt or chocolate! (or all three... yum!)

The company currently offers four flavors - Traditional, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt, Honey & Oats and Coconut (and I was sent a case of sixteen; four of each).

I love that you can pronounce all of the ingredients that are used in the wafels. Not only that, they are scrum-didly-umptious. My favorite flavor was the Coconut and the hubby loved the Honey & Oats most, but let's just say that none of them stood a chance in the McDot household ;) They were all scarfed down in a matter of days (but thankfully they are each only 130 calories so they weren't a major hit to our caloric intake for the day).

These are super portable, guilt-free snacks that can be munched on just about any time - whether it be on the way to a workout, with your morning coffee, while relaxing at the pool or as an afternoon pick-me-up while you are working.

I probably wouldn't use them as fuel for long workouts (since they only have 1 gram of protein), but if you needed a little burst of energy or a bite to eat to keep your tummy in check before you head out for a run I'd totally be down.

If you are interested in trying a wafel (or seven... don't say I didn't warn you), you can use the store locator to find a location selling the deliciousness near you or order directly on their site. PS If you subscribe you save 20%! And just in case you don't know which flavor(s) to order, purchase a Variety Case and give them all a go.

What flavor would you be most interested in trying?

Workout Recap - Week 10

Sunday, March 5th – 4 mile run with the hubby, Stretched & Foam Rolled

Monday, March 6th – Strength Training (abs, back, legs and arms) & 4 mile progression run

Tuesday, March 7th –  5 mile progression run, Stretched & Foam Rolled

Wednesday, March 8th – 60 minutes on the stationary bike,  Stretched & Foam Rolled

Thursday, March 9th – 3 mile progression run, Stretched & Foam Rolled

Friday, March 10th –  8 mile run

Saturday, March 11th – Rest Day ("active recovery": 3.1 mile hike with the hubby and pup), Stretched & Foam Rolled

I feel like I'm in this weird limbo time... like I should be feeling rested because I am "tapering" for the Los Angeles Marathon, yet I don't know that my legs feel rested from the Phoenix Marathon. Thankfully I'll be doing LA as more of a "fun run" (although that's technically what Phoenix was all about too) so I don't have any added stress of having to go out there and kill it.

How were your workouts this past week?

Friday Favorites

Another week bites the dust! Am I the only one who is astonished that it is already March?! Holy crapoly... this year is FLYING by! Anywho, enough about the past, let's focus on the present - and everything that I am loving these days!

QALO Stackables

If you follow me on social media, I'm sure you've seen my hand before (whether it be in my #CarleesTreasures shots or selfies-a-plenty). And you've probably noticed that I love stacking my classic QALO wedding bands (I am not ashamed to admit that I have nine of them in different colors). Well, earlier this week they actually released a stackable line! There are five colors and four new styles (as opposed to the standard rings I stack). Can you say AWESOMESAUCE?!

Sun Bum Beach Formula - Hair Lightener

Please tell me I'm not the only one who used to use "Sun-In" when I was younger. Well, Sun Bum released a better version of that old school hair lightener, Sun Bum Beach Formula - Hair Lightener, and I am digging it. My hair normally lightens on its own during the summer, but why not help it out a little (especially since it's only March ;)). Sun Bum's Beach Formula Hair Lightener is specifically formulated to brighten and tone your locks by amplifying the natural highlighting effects of the sun. Infused with Costa Rican pineapples and Hawaiian Lehua honey, their special UV-activated blend creates natural subtle tones and beautiful highlights without the brassiness hair lighteners can cause.

Being Used in Race Material

A friend on Twitter mentioned that a picture of the hubby and I had been used in an email blast for a local race, the Cinco de Mayo Trail Run. Sure enough, I checked my inbox and there we were, staring right back at me! It's a little surprising, but fun at the same time. PS If you're in the San Diego area and want to run a trail race with us, we'll be there again this year (tackling the treacherous 10K... okay, maybe it isn't "treacherous", but it's a pretty tough course).

Rock 'N' Blog

It's an honor to report that I was accepted into the Rock 'N' Blog crew for a second year in a row. WHOOO HOOOO! Not only does that mean I get a few perks myself (like entry to some of the Rock 'N' Roll races), but I get to spread the love to you too! If you use code "RNB15" you can save $15 on most Half and Full Marathons offered by the Rock 'N' Roll series! As of right now I am planning on running the Carlsbad 5000, the San Diego Half, the Los Angeles Half and the Las Vegas 5K and Half (but could be talked into more ;)). I hope to see you out on the course(s)!
