Celebrate YOU

Today I want to take a moment and CELEBRATE YOU! Celebrate what you are doing and how far you've come. Whether you are a runner, taking a few extra minutes to walk the dog, cartwheeling in the park, scootering with your kids, hiking on the weekends, biking around the block, etc - IF YOU ARE MOVING, YOU ARE GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

But at times we don't feel that way, do we? Often we don't celebrate our accomplishments and it's normally because of one little word - COMPARISON! Maybe it's that nagging voice in our head that tells us we aren't as fast as so-and-so. Or maybe we go out and have an awesome run only to come home and check Instagram to see we didn't run even half the distance as that person and now our great run doesn't feel so stellar any more.

Source

No matter how hard it is to believe, the only person I should be comparing myself to is the ME from yesterday (and the same goes for you). It is so easy for us to look at what others are doing and compare it to where we are at in our lives - but you know what? We aren't them... And they aren't us... THIS IS MY JOURNEY, NO ONE ELSE'S! Even if the change is minute, we are still making positive change! Progress is progress NO MATTER HOW SMALL!

Source

Sometimes all we need is a little change in perspective. In college I went through a time where I was struggling with my faith. It seemed as though everyone else was "hearing" from God, yet I felt as if I was chasing after a God that didn't want to be found. Wise counsel in my life at the time said something along the lines of "If you never heard from God again, would you still follow Him?". That was a tough question to answer and one that took a big change of perspective on my part. I needed to look at the BIG picture (in that instance, the eternal perspective). And in fitness it can be the same thing.

"They" say that most times people will give up because they are too focused on how far they have left to go, rather than noticing how far they've come. It is easy to focus on the here and now - the workout we just had, the run we just finished, etc. But when was the last time you took a moment and thought about where you were 6 months ago/ a year ago/ three years ago? The Disneyland Half Marathon (which I will be running at the beginning of September) marks my running anniversary. I ran it first in 2012 - just a mere three years ago... Before that,  I WASN'T A RUNNER! And what about a year ago? I was running 9 minute miles and stoked about it. Every so often, REMEMBER HOW FAR YOU'VE COME! Maybe instead of focusing on what's coming in the windshield, it is time to look in the rear view mirror and notice the voyage you've been taking. This life is about the journey - the BIG picture! CELEBRATE YOUR PROGRESSION!

I'm sorry that this post was full of 101 cliches, but they tend to hang around because of the truth they speak into our lives. And I have to be honest, I don't know if this post was more for you or something I needed to hear myself... I'm still working on this whole 'self love' thing, but hopefully we will get there eventually! So let's take today to APPRECIATE OUR ACHIEVEMENTS!

How often do you think back on your journey?

How To Do A Progression Run

Now I want to start off by saying I am NOT, I repeat, NOT a running coach or even a seasoned runner (I still consider myself a newbie - just having started running about 3 years ago). With that out of the way, I have had some people ask me about my progression runs, so I thought I would do a post about them. This is NOT necessarily the "proper" way to do one (but I really don't know since I've never done any research on the topic), but it is what works for me, so I figured I'd let you know and maybe it'll work for you...

ProgressionRun

First - what is a progression run? Basic definition - start slow, finish fast. I break it down by miles, so I am attempting to run every mile faster than the previous one (also considered 'Negative Splits').

Next - why do a progression run? Experts say that these types of runs can push your endurance limits, build stamina, encourage mental patience (due to the slow start and restraint needed), and teach your body to run on tired legs.

Now that the nitty gritty is out of the way - let's talk about what this actually looks like in my training.

I have had a couple people ask me if I choose the pace I run each mile at during a progression run. For me, I do not. Honestly, it depends on the distance I am running and how reserved I can run the first mile at. If I am running a shorter progression run (say 5 or 6 miles), I will try to run each consecutive mile between 10 and 20 seconds faster than the previous one. If I am running a longer progression run (say 8 or 10 miles), I normally shoot for increasing my pace between 5 and 10 seconds each mile. And obviously the pace at which I run my first mile has a LOT to do with how the run goes. The "slower" I run that first mile, the more wiggle room I have to work with to get future miles faster, but the "faster" I go, the closer together my pace tends to be throughout the run (seeing as my little legs can only go so fast... at least at this point).

We live in a somewhat hilly area. I have a 5 mile loop from our house to a local park and back. Heading to the park is decently uphill, which means heading home is more of a gradual downhill. This works GREAT with some progression runs because the uphill at the beginning forces me to slow my pace a bit and the downhill at the end allows gravity to help me out when my legs are getting tired. Maybe this is "cheating" a bit, but at least it gets my body used to the idea.

ProgressionRun
I think this was the first time I have EVER seen a 6 in the front of one of
my mile times... I guess you can say the downhill helped a bit ;)

Not all of my runs are on hills though. I find for progression runs I can't stop - meaning if I need to carry hydration with me or run a route that doesn't have traffic signals, that is what I have to do. If I end up having to stop at drinking fountains or wait for lights to change it messes with my rhythm and I have a much harder time keeping with the progression.

ProgressionRun
This one was done down at the beach. There is a bike/ pedestrian lane
along "the strand" and through the harbor, which makes for great
running routes (not to mention the sea breezes keep it cool).

Also, I prefer to run my progression runs on out-and-back routes - meaning you run in one direction for half the distance and then turn around and run the same route backwards for the other half. The reason I like this is because once I flip around I know I can start opening up my speed. For me, the first half of the run, although it is slower, is normally more difficult for me. I am having to reign myself in which can be tough. By the time I am half way done I know "the faster I go, the faster I get done" and can take off a bit more.

HalfWay

Another tip is to keep the route in mind when planning out your progression run. For example, during yesterday's 10 mile progression run, there is a decent "dip" (what I consider a backwards hill because the downhill comes first, followed by the uphill) around mile 7. With this in mind, I try to run mile 6 as close to mile 5's pace because I know mile 7 will be tougher due to the elevation changes.

ProgressionRun
Split times from yesterday's 10
mile progression run.

Throughout the run, I try not to be too focused on my pace - normally only looking at my watch every half mile or so. I know that probably seems like the opposite of what you should do, since this run is based around pace, but I guess I am trying to train my brain to work on muscle memory. Most of the time I attempt to feel as though I am continually going faster (and then double check my watch just to make sure the numbers are correlating to the perceived increase in intensity). For the last mile I normally try and keep the pace the same as the previous mile for the first half and then go just about as fast as I can for the last quarter to half mile at the end - might as well give it all you've got, right?! These workouts are difficult and by the time I finish I know my body couldn't do another mile faster than the one I finished with.

I'm not sure if this was helpful at all, so if it wasn't, I'm sorry. Like I said at the beginning, I am not a running coach (or even a qualified runner... maybe I just play one on Instagram ;)). Lately I have really been enjoying the progression runs and I guess since I have been doing them frequently people see the times and ask about them. Hopefully this gives you an idea of how I do them (and encourages you to give them a try if they aren't in your normal running routine). My BIG TIP and main focus is reminding myself to START SLOW so that I can build speed throughout the run. If I start too fast I know I won't be able to continue to speed up.

Do you enjoy progression runs?

I'm Heading To #BlogFest

So I haven't said much about it, but a while back I won a FREE entry to this year's #BlogFest. Uh... a ton of fitness bloggers in one place learning about blogging and fitness? SIGN ME UP!

Source

I guess I have been pretty quiet about it though and I think I know why. Although I started this blog back in December of 2006 (shut the front door, has it really been THAT long?!), I don't necessarily feel like a "legit" blogger. Honestly, most days I think the only readers I have may be my mom and dad (who might refresh the page a few times each). So this feels WAY outside of my comfort zone. I mean, the people in attendance will be a "Who's Who" in the blogging and fitness world and then there is little ol' me...

Even though I would LOVE to have blogging be my full time job, it's not... Not even close... It definitely does not pay the bills (I actually think I have only ever gotten paid to write two posts in the last 9 years)! I have met some amazing people and received some sweet product because of it (mostly due to me reaching out to companies... I'm still a tiny fish in a HUGE pond to have brands find me on their own), but I guess it is more of a journal for me to look back at and a hobby for me to spend time on. But what better place to go and learn to see if it can become something bigger for me, right?

So I will be heading up to Los Angeles this afternoon (figured it would be easier to stay in a hotel tonight and tomorrow night rather than having to drive the 2 hours each way early in the morning and late at night on Thursday and Friday) with a charged laptop (and external batteries), a notebook and pens, tons of workout gear (since you know I sweat A LOT), and an open mind ready to soak in everything I can.

Oh yeah, and I will also have some Momentum Jewelry goodies with me! How could I forget?! I'll be packing some Motivate Wraps and Foot Notes to GIVE AWAY!! (HINT: Make sure you follow me on Instagram - @CarleeMcDot and Twitter - @CarleeMcDot if you will be at #BlogFest and want to score some FREE goodies!) Don't worry, I have an EXTRA EXCITING post for everyone else not in attendance on Saturday, so don't forget to check back then!

And if you will be around the LA area tomorrow morning around 6:45am, you should join me at Linzie and Tiffany's shake out run! You can RSVP here if you haven't already (you do NOT need to be attending the conference to join in on the run and ALL fitness levels are welcome!). (I will be bringing a few of the Momentum Jewelry goodies with me to this run... so that's another reason to join us!)

Now it is time to double check that I have everything I need packed and ready to go. (I used to pack for trips like weeks in advance, but for some reason {maybe it's my old age of 30 ;)}, I tend to delay the packing part of getting ready... Tends to make for a stressful last hour or so before leaving, but I just can't shake the procrastination on packing lately.)

Would you ever consider going to a conference like this?

A Day In The Life

I thought it might be interesting for you all to see what I do in an average day. I've had a couple people comment that it looks like all I do is #RunAllDay (which I WISH was the case - if someone knows of anyone willing to pay me to run, blog, take pictures, and lay in the sun PLEASE give them my number!), so why not give you a glimpse in a standard day in Carlee's life?!

Monday, July 13th

6:27am: Woke up (No alarm needed - when the sky is awake, I AM AWAKE... which reminds me, we REALLY NEED some black out blinds)

Sleep tracking from my Garmin Vívofit2

6:30am - 7:00am: Checked social media (Obviously it is UBER important to see what everyone has been doing since I went to sleep the night before... But honestly it give me a bit of time to fully "wake up".)

7:00am - 7:40am: Worked on yesterday's blog post

7:40am - 7:45am: Packed hubby's lunch, then got out breakfast for both the pup and the hubby

7:45am - 8:00am: Woke up the hubby and chatted a bit about the day ahead

8:00am - 12:00pm: Worked (and I got to work with my girl Kara, which is ALWAYS a treat, even if her Internet was rude on her)

12:00pm - 12:25pm: Walked the pup

Sometimes walks are about hiding from the sun and trying
to blend in with your surroundings...

12:25pm - 2:15pm: Ran on the treadmill (I've always heard that you should run your long runs SLOW, but then I read an article in Runner's World at the pool on Saturday that said maybe that isn't the case. The thought is that if you have a goal time in mind for an upcoming race, maybe you should actually run some of the miles in your long run at that goal pace {to give you confidence that you CAN run at that pace and also to get your body familiar with running at that speed}. Obviously not all of your run longs should be at race pace, but some... And since I am not actually on a training plan I decided I would give it a go and see if I could hold my 8:00/mile pace for 10 miles. It was ROUGH, but I FREAKIN' DID IT! {PS Didn't know if I wanted to listen to music or watch a movie during the run, so I ended up watching the first half of Rent and singing along the whole time - best of both worlds!})

2:15pm - 3:15pm: Showered and got ready

3:15pm - 4:15pm: Went and got gas (MAN the prices have SKY-ROCKETED $.50 per gallon in the past 4 days - OUCH!) and groceries

4:15pm - 4:30pm: Put away the groceries I brought in (and while I was at it, I think I ate about half of the cherries that I purchased)

4:30pm - 5:00pm: Walked the pup

Sometimes walks are all about picking up unripened avocados that fall from
the trees and we think they are delicious toys to play with...

5:00pm - 6:00pm: #HealthyWayMag Twitter Chat

6:00pm - 6:30pm: Made dinner

6:30pm - 7:00pm: Ate dinner with the hubster and talked about the day

7:00pm - 8:00pm: Ryan and I took Walt up the the local school to let him run around for a while

8:00pm - 9:00pm: Caught up on True Detective (LOVED the first season, but this one is "eh" so far)

9:00pm - 9:15pm: Foam rolled and stretched

9:15pm - 9:45pm: Read blogs and checked social media while laying in bed

9:45pm: Put the phone on "Do Not Disturb" mode and switched my Garmin Vívofit2 to "sleep"

**Throughout the day I also did 4 loads of laundry, ran the dishwasher, hard boiled eggs for a couple meals, and started getting stuff together for #BlogFest later in the week. Since Ryan is the main bread winner in our home (my job is more just "play money" - meaning race entries and running shoes ;)), the least I can do is keep the house somewhat respectable.**

So there you have it. Again, I'm not even sure you really care what I do throughout the day, but at least you get a peak into an average day in my life. We all get the same 24 hours - the only difference it what we do with the time we've been given!

Do you ever run portions of your long runs at race pace?

Weekend Review (Through Pictures & Videos)

Friday morning started off by me running 18 miles.

Then Friday evening the hubby and I met up with some friends for a local classic car show.

Mustangs are my FAVE!

On the way home we stopped by a couple stores to do a little shopping (he needed new shorts) and I found a couple cute tops.

Saturday morning we took Walt up to the school to let him run around and chase the crows.

Then it was a nice, relaxing Saturday morning drive and walk along the cliffs to watch the surfers.

Walt loves to FLY out the window...

I was pretty proud of my artsy shot ;)

And since it was 7/11, we hit up SIX of them within a span of less than an hour to collect our FREE SLURPEES! (Next time I will plan ahead and maybe change out of my PJ's and brush my hair before we go out for so many selfies...)

Stop One - Piña Colada for me and Sour Patch Watermelon for Ryan

Stop Two - Cherry for me and Solar Flare for Ryan

Stop Three - Cherry Limeade for me and Coke for Ryan

Don't mind if we do ;)

Some of our damage :)

Stop Four - Orange Creamsicle for me and Blue Rush for Ryan

Stop Five - Solar Flare for me and Banana for Ryan

Stop Six - Mango for me and Cherry Coke for Ryan

Ryan tried to do a panoramic pictures and still couldn't capture all the cups!

I only filled my cups about half way and by the end I was
trying to give them to Walt to finish ;)

Mango might have been my favorite flavor

Talented wiener dog, eh? Drinks from a straw ;)

Since I take my rest days seriously I made sure we spent a couple hours at the pool before I had to work.

Before he cut his #LongHairDontCare

Sunday morning Ryan wanted to do a 8 mile run (his longest in a while), so we made our way down to Carlsbad to run the coast. The only issue was the Carlsbad Triathlon was going on so we were forced to change up our route a bit. (But I did love getting the chance to cheer on the athletes!)

Hubby ROCKED those miles (even if afterwards he needed to take a breather ;)).

I had to work for a few hours in the afternoon, so the boys maxed and relaxed while I was making the money.

What a RUFF life these guys have...

For Christmas, instead of getting our best friends' kids gifts, we decided to do "experiences". The youngest got a "Movie with the McDots" and finally cashed in on it... We took him to see the Minions Movie (complete with soda and the biggest popcorn one could find {which those two POLISHED OFF BEFORE THE PREVIEWS WERE DONE}... and then a McDonalds Happy Meal with a Minions toy in it for dinner on the way home).

It was a busy weekend, especially with having to work two shifts, but we made sure to enjoy it! And I also snuck in a couple extra Walt snuggles (doesn't he look thrilled?!).

What did YOU do this weekend?
