César Chávez Day

César Estrada Chávez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993), born in Yuma, Arizona, was an American farm worker of Mexican descent, labor leader, and civil rights activist who with Dolores Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. Supporters say his work led to numerous improvements for union laborers. He is considered a hero for farm laborers, and opposed both legal and illegal immigration to help keep wages higher and improve work safety rules. He is hailed as one of the greatest American civil rights leaders. His birthday has become a holiday in eight U.S. states. Many parks, cultural centers, libraries, schools, and streets have been named in his honor in cities across the United States.

Mugger treated nicely

A Victim Treats His Mugger Right

Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.

But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.

He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife.

"He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says.

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."

The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'"

Diaz replied: "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me ... hey, you're more than welcome.

"You know, I just felt maybe he really needs help," Diaz says.

Diaz says he and the teen went into the diner and sat in a booth.

"The manager comes by, the dishwashers come by, the waiters come by to say hi," Diaz says. "The kid was like, 'You know everybody here. Do you own this place?'"

"No, I just eat here a lot," Diaz says he told the teen. "He says, 'But you're even nice to the dishwasher.'"

Diaz replied, "Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?"

"Yea, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way," the teen said.

Diaz asked him what he wanted out of life. "He just had almost a sad face," Diaz says.

The teen couldn't answer Diaz — or he didn't want to.

When the bill arrived, Diaz told the teen, "Look, I guess you're going to have to pay for this bill 'cause you have my money and I can't pay for this. So if you give me my wallet back, I'll gladly treat you."

The teen "didn't even think about it" and returned the wallet, Diaz says. "I gave him $20 ... I figure maybe it'll help him. I don't know."

Diaz says he asked for something in return — the teen's knife — "and he gave it to me."

Afterward, when Diaz told his mother what happened, she said, "You're the type of kid that if someone asked you for the time, you gave them your watch."

"I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It's as simple as it gets in this complicated world."

Last Sunday I forgot my camera in Ryan's car when I came back down to San Diego. Ryan was gracious enough to fill in for me with my Photo Of The Day and be a "Guest Photographer". Bad Plastic!

Plastic Waste Taking Toll on Beaches, Pacific Ocean

Two San Diego environmental groups are saying 80-percent of the trash washed up on San Diego beaches last year was made of plastic. Reporter David Nogueras has more.

Twice a month, San Diego Coastkeeper and the Surfrider Foundation organize beach cleanups throughout San Diego County. Beginning last year, they asked their volunteers to fill out surveys about what they found.

The groups say that volunteers picked up more 3 and a half tons of trash in San Diego County, most of it plastic products and cigarette butts.

Danielle Miller is with San Diego Coastkeeper. She says the problem of plastics in the ocean isn't just specific to San Diego.

She describes a giant soup of plastic swirling in the Pacific Ocean.

Carlsbad Car

Battery-powered vehicle due in November claims 120-mile driving range

It might look like a bird or a plane, but its name indicates it has no such ambitions.

A Carlsbad company named Aptera, a Greek word for “wingless flight,” has designed a battery-powered vehicle with a claimed 120-mile driving range, more than double that of most electric cars today. The two-seat, three-wheeled vehicle is engineered and fabricated of lightweight materials and has a top speed of almost 90 mph.

Deliveries of the first cars – technically a motorcycle – will begin in November with a sale price of $30,000, Aptera co-founder and chief executive Steve Fambro said last week. A gasoline-electric version will soon follow, also priced about $30,000.

More orders have been placed for the hybrid version, which uses a one-cylinder engine as a generator and will get more than 300 miles per gallon and have a range of 600 miles, the company said.

It was selfishness that motivated Fambro to build a highly efficient, three-wheeled electric vehicle.

“I wanted to ride in the carpool lanes by myself,” he said.

So I was looking at the sports news and I found many articles about how Chris Webber is retiring today. Most of them seemed to be pointing out a lot of negatives in his career, but I have to say HE IS OKAY IN MY BOOK!!

Here is some of the article I was just reading:

Chris Webber will finally hobble off into the NBA sunset today, and fittingly it leaves us with mixed feelings about a superstar talent with a star-crossed career before his 15th season ever really began.

He leaves the NBA having averaged 20.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists – joining Elgin Baylor, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Kevin Garnett and Oscar Robertson as the only players in history to average at least 20, 9.0 and 4.0 for a career.

He was the most famous member of the illustrious Fab Five at Michigan, leading the group that made it to the NCAA championship game in both of his seasons. But the Detroit native won’t be remembered for that as much as for the timeout he called in the final minute that virtually cost them the title to North Carolina in 1993.

Easter Weather

I know that some people were coated in snow for Easter, but we were having RECORD BREAKING HIGHS in San Diego!! :)

SAN DIEGO – If it felt unseasonably warm yesterday, that's because it was.

The National Weather Service said temperature records were broken in several spots around the county. The Wild Animal Park hit a high of 93, breaking the record of 86 set in 1998. Temperatures in El Cajon reached 90, breaking the record of 84 set in 1986.

Records were also set at Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa, with a high of 88; in Ramona, with a high of 84; and in Oceanside, with a high of 81.
Lindbergh Field, San Diego's official weather station, also hit 81 degrees. It was the warmest day in town since Nov. 15. The record for March 23 in San Diego is 88, set in 1926.

Guest Week

So yesterday Ryan and I went down to the beach and I was taking some photos for my photo of the day. After we were done he dropped me back off at my car and I headed back down to San Diego. I noticed when I got back to my apartment that I FORGOT MY CAMERA IN RYAN'S CAR! Bummer!! I chatted with Ryan about it and he offered up being a Guest Photographer for the week. :) So tonight he is going to send me the shots that I took this past weekend (so I can update those) and begin taking his own shots. We will see how it works out :).

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - De'Jon Jackson made a jumper with 1.2 seconds left in overtime as San Diego upset Connecticut 70-69, in the first round of the West Region of the NCAA Tournament at St. Pete Times Forum.

After San Diego called time out with 5.2 seconds to go and trailing 69-68, the Toreros inbounded the ball from midcourt and Jackson's mid-range jumper from the right side was true, making it 70-69. Following a Huskies timeout, they inbounded from under their own basket, but the pass was intercepted and San Diego walked away with the dramatic victory.

Good Friday

Good Friday, also called Holy Friday or Great Friday, is the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. It commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus at Calvary.

Jesus, having been arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane by the Temple Guards through the guidance of Judas Iscariot, is brought to the house of Annas, who is father-in-law of the current high priest, Caiaphas. There he is interrogated with little result, and sent bound to Caiaphas the high priest, where the Sanhedron had assembled (John 18:1-24).

Conflicting testimony against Jesus is brought forth by many witnesses, to which Jesus answers nothing. Finally the high priest adjures Jesus to respond under solemn oath, saying "I adjure you, by the Living God, to tell us, are you the Anointed One, the Son of God?" Jesus testifies in the affirmative, "You have said it, and in time you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty, coming on the clouds of Heaven." The high priest condemns Jesus for blasphemy, and the Sanhedron concurs with a sentence of death (Matthew 26:57-66).

In the morning, the whole assembly brings Jesus to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, under charges of subverting the nation, opposing taxes to Caesar, and making himself a king (Luke 23:1-2). Pilate authorizes the Jewish leaders to judge Jesus according to their own Law and execute sentencing, however the Jewish leaders reply that they are not allowed by the Romans to carry out a sentence of death (John 18:31).

Pilate questions Jesus, and tells the assembly that there is no basis for sentencing. Upon learning that Jesus is from Galilee, Pilate refers the case to the ruler of Galilee, King Herod, who was in Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. Herod questions Jesus but receives no answer; Herod sends Jesus back to Pilate. Pilate tells the assembly that neither he nor Herod have found guilt in Jesus; Pilate resolves to have Jesus whipped and released (Luke 23:3-16).

It was a custom during the feast of Passover for the Romans to release one prisoner as requested by the Jews. Pilate asks the crowd who they would like to be released. Under the guidance of the chief priests, the crowd asks for Barabbas, who had been imprisoned for committing murder during an insurrection. Pilate asks what they would have him do with Jesus, and they demand, "Crucify him" (Mark 15:6-14). Pilate's wife had seen Jesus in a dream earlier that day; she forewarns Pilate to "have nothing to do with this righteous man" (Matthew 27:19).

Pilate has Jesus flogged, then brings him out to the crowd to release him. The chief priests inform Pilate of a new charge, demanding Jesus be sentenced to death "because he claimed to be God's son." This possibility filled Pilate with fear, and he brought Jesus back inside the palace and demanded to know from where he came (John 19:1-9).

Coming before the crowd one last time, Pilate declares Jesus innocent, washing his own hands in water to show he has no part in this condemnation. Nevertheless, Pilate hands Jesus over to be crucified in order to forestall a riot (Matthew 27:24-26). The sentence written is "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." Jesus carries his cross to the site of execution, called the place of the Skull, or "Golgotha" in Hebrew and "Calvary" in Latin. There he is crucified along with two criminals (John 19:17-22).

Jesus agonizes on the cross for three hours while the sun is darkened. With a loud cry, Jesus gives up his spirit. There is an earthquake, tombs break open, and the curtain in the Temple is torn from top to bottom. The centurion on guard at the site of crucifixion declares, "Truly this was God's Son!" (Matthew 27:45-54)

Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin and secret follower of Jesus, who had not consented to his condemnation, goes to Pilate to request the body of Jesus (Luke 23:50-52). Pilate asks confirmation from the centurion whether Jesus is dead (Mark 15:44). A soldier pierced the side of Jesus with a lance causing blood and water to flow out (John 19:34), and the centurian informs Pilate that Jesus is dead (Mark 15:45).

Joseph of Arimathea takes the body of Jesus, wraps it in a clean linen shroud, and places it in his own new tomb that had been carved in the rock (Matthew 27:59-60) in a garden near the site of crucifixion. Another secret follower of Jesus and member of the Sanhedrin named Nicodemus (John 3:1) also came bringing 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes, and places them in the linen with the body of Jesus, according to Jewish burial customs (John 19:39-40). They rolled a large rock over the entrance of the tomb (Matthew 27:60). Then they returned home and rested, because at sunset began the Sabbath (Luke 23:54-56).

Seeing Pony

She may be just 60cm high, but Panda the miniature pony is fulfilling a tall order – as a 'guide horse' for the blind.

The two-year-old was taught by her trainers to help blind people in the same way as conventional guide dogs.

She stops at kerbs, spots uneven pavements and crosses busy roads. She can get in and out of a car, go up and down stairs and is completely house trained.

Ouchy

Have you ever burnt the roof of your mouth? I burn my tongue all the time (I guess you can say I am impatient when it comes to me and my food :) ), but last night I did another silly thing and burnt the roof of my mouth. I had put a Lean Cuisine Cheese Pizza in the microwave for dinner and in the meantime I was opening up my mail. I guess I didn't realize that I put it in for a little too long and that the pizza would be REAL hot. I cut it in pieces and the first bite... THE CHEESE SCALDED THE ROOF OF MY MOUTH! Ouchy. So of course when I had this fleshy piece hanging down in my mouth I had to pull at it and get rid of it, which further tore the roof of my mouth. I am not left with this puffy ball behind my front teeth and my tongue just refuses to stop playing with. I hope it heals soon, cause man I did a number on it.

Boondock Saints TWO

Greenlight?

Troy Duffy has a big announcement for St. Patrick’s Day: Boondock Saints 2 might be happening after all. According to Duffy, Sony Picture Studios has greenlit The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day, and the original cast (with the exception of Willem Dafoe) are excited to return. Duffy claims that the film will begin shooting Summer 2008. He made the announcement in a video posted on his YouTube account earlier today (thanks to /Film reader IronMonger for sending this in).

Many believed the original screenplay was on par with Quentin Tarantino’s early work, the finished film - not as much (again, see Overnight). Despite poor reviews and non-existent box office (Mojo lists a domestic total of $30,471), The Boondock Saints quickly became a cult classic among film fanatics.

Uh oh Spaghetti O's

DETROIT (AP) - A prosecutor says she will make an announcement next week on whether she will charge Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has been looking into claims that Kilpatrick and one-time Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath during a whistle-blowers' trial last summer, when they denied an affair.

A perjury conviction for lying under oath could bring up to 15 years in prison and force Kilpatrick to resign.

Worthy's comments Wednesday come a day after the Detroit City Council approved a non-binding resolution asking Kilpatrick resign. Kilpatrick has said repeatedly he won't step down.

Spell Check

Oopsy, I guess someone wasn't spell checking the Piston's jerseys.

Look closely at the picture. See anything wrong? If you don't, you're either not looking hard enough or don't know how to spell Rip Hamilton's name. That's the jersey he wore for the start of Tuesday's game against the Nuggets until the team eventually noticed and gave him some new threads.

Maybe I could understand a missing consonant from Walter Herrmann's jersey, but Hamilton's name is neither hard to spell nor unfamiliar, as Dana Wakiji of the Detroit News points out:

But I mean, really. Is it his first year with the team? I don't think so. And I don't think it's a tough name to spell. World-wide Wes is blaming Rasheed for it, but we'll have to see who ends up taking the blame for this one.

IRS Checks!!

Social Security numbers determine when economic stimulus checks go out

The Internal Revenue Service outlined Monday how your Social Security number will determine when you probably will get your economic stimulus check this spring or summer.

The IRS said it plans to deliver 130 million checks between May 2 and July 11 based on the last two digits of the recipient’s Social Security number.

According to the IRS, direct deposit payments will be made May 2 to recipients whose Social Security numbers end in 00-20.

Direct deposit payments will be made a week later, May 9, to people whose numbers end in 21-75. The final round of direct deposit payments will be made May 16 to people whose numbers end in 76-99.

Those who will receive paper checks are on a longer schedule.

Checks will be mailed May 16 to those whose numbers end in 00-09. A second round of checks will be mailed May 23 to those whose numbers end in 10-18. A May 30 mailing will be made to people whose numbers end in 19-25.

Subsequent mailings will be made June 6 to those whose numbers end in 26-38, June 13 to numbers 39-51, June 20 to numbers 52-63, June 27 to numbers 64-75, July 4 to numbers 76-87, and July 11 to those whose numbers end in 88-99.

The payments of $300 each to certain low-income recipients and $600 or $1,200 to single or married taxpayers, plus additional money for families with qualifying children, will be calculated from tax returns filed by April 15. Filers also can indicate on those returns whether they want money directly deposited in a bank account or mailed to them.

Restaurant Uproar: Tag someone at a restaurant. Buy someone dessert. Pay for the person behind you at a drive-thru. Pick up the tab of a random table at a restaurant and ask the cashier to pass on the smile card (after you leave). If you're a parent, have your child write a thank-you note for the waitress. Pick up flowers at the grocery store and after you check out, give them to the cashier or the bagger with a big smile and a smile card.

I found a few articles reviewing Horton Hears a Who, so thought I would link a couple (one on the fact that it was the biggest opening and the other on a movie review). My thoughts - LOVED IT!! It made me smile the whole movie. I think that if Dr. Seuss saw it, HE WOULD BE SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR!! It might be up there with my favorites like Hook!! Have you seen it? What were your thoughts?

'Horton Hears A Who' Tramples Box-Office Competition With Biggest Opening Of 2008

"Horton Hears a Who" continued the streak of Dr. Seuss, Hollywood's hottest screenwriter, with a $45.1 million opening over the weekend. Following on the heels of Jim Carrey's "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" and Mike Myers' "The Cat in the Hat," the computer-generated cartoon brought Carrey back to Who-ville, this time alongside the vocal talents of Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett and Carol Burnett. The story of an elephant, a speck of dust and having the bravery to speak out against those around you (originally published shortly after the McCarthy hearings), "Horton" ranks as the fifth-biggest G-rated opening of all time. It was also Carrey's best weekend since 2003's "Bruce Almighty."

Movie Review: Horton Hears a Who

The story is a simple one. It espouses the mantra that "A person is a person, no matter how small." It is a positive outlook on live, recognizing the rights of all living beings regardless of status. In addition to the positive tale, I found the overall story to be well written and much smarter than I was expecting it to be. I liked the way it touched on issues of faith, imagination, and a right to life. It brought up these issues without feeling preachy, never digging terribly deep while still retaining a definite intelligence.

Weinermobile

Even the Weinermobile is downsizing! Now based on a MINI Cooper S!

The Oscar Mayer Weinermobile is one of America's automotive icons. The giant hot dogs have rolled around the country since the original appeared in 1936 promoting the brand's products. There have been numerous generations over the last seven decades built on a variety of truck and motorhome chassis. It now appears that rising fuel prices have even forced the weiner to shrink.

My New Ride

Ryan and I went and checked out Vespas this weekend (because we may rent them for the wedding), and I have fallen in love :). Once we get married and I get a job that I don't have to take the expressway I plan on selling PJ and getting a Vespa!! YAY!!

ASPF Walk

This upcoming fall I will be walking in the American Suicide Prevention Foundation's Out Of The Darkness Walk.
