Ice Waves

Got this in an email and thought it was good enough to share... Thank goodness I am now in SUNNY San Diego :)

Michigan has had the coldest winter in decades. Water expands to freeze, and at Mackinaw City the water in Lake Huron below the surface ice was supercooled. It expanded to break through the surface ice and froze into this incredible wave. I've seen pictures of this wave phenomena in Antarctica, but in Michigan?

    The pictures are beautiful, but they aren't from Michigan (http://www.snopes.com/photos/natural/antarcticwave.asp). This is only the 10th coldest winter; in 1993-94 all the great lakes froze over, something that very rarely happens.

    Thanks for clearing that up!! I guess that's why we shouldn't believe everything we read (at least one reason, huh)!!

    As cool as those pics are - I would have been surprised if it was true (and gotten in the car to drive up north!)
    Anyway - the pics are still cool. I wonder if they are true at all anywhere??
