Go Wings

Stars lead Red Wings into second round

There's a confidence in knowing you've been there, done that.

For playoff luminaries such as Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk, Game 7 is the time to shine. And did they ever Tuesday night.

With surgical precision, the two veteran stars ripped apart the Coyotes with two goals apiece. Henrik Zetterberg also chipped in three assists as the Red Wings clobbered the home team 6-1 to take the first-round series.

Detroit looked very much like the veteran team with Cup rings galore, Phoenix like the nervous debutante.

"Our top guys came to play tonight," said Wings goalie Jimmy Howard. "And they're some of the best in the league."

With the whole hockey world waiting intently to see how Alex Ovechkin and his star-studded Washington Capitals will react in their Game 7 against Montreal on Wednesday night, if they were watching Tuesday, they saw how it's done. Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom raised their games, and the rest of the group followed.

Geocaching on SVU

I was watching Law & Order: SVU and the body was found by GEO CACHERS!! I love that the word is getting out... even if it is on Law & Order :)

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit : "Sugar"
Episode Description
Originally Aired: September 30, 2009
A young woman's body is found stuffed inside a suitcase, and police believe that Mindy Keefe, the victim, was a train passenger on her way to Tampa when she was murdered. Detectives Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson turn to Keefe's financier boyfriend, Owen Cassidy's yacht to investigate. However, Cassidy claims he was on his boat during the time of the murder. After further searching, the detectives discover Keefe belonged to an online dating website. However, when the CEO of the dating website, Vance Shepard, refuses to comment on the case, the detectives turn to ADA Sonya Paxton for help.

Huggin' Bear

'Toy Story 3' Features Toy You Never Had

What do you do when, say, you have a highly anticipated third "Toy Story" film coming out on June 18 and you want to incorporate a "classic" toy that's never actually been released? If you're Pixar, you create a fake 1980s era television commercial -- and even include custom VHS cassette tape distortions.

Remember Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear? No? Well, that's because it never existed, until now. But judging from this commercial posted on YouTube, it would seem to be a childhood favorite. Watch the ad below:

Stanley Prayer :)

Thanks for this madre!!

Our father who art in the Joe. Hockey be thy name. Thy will be done. The cup will be won. On ice, as well as in the stands. Give us this day our hockey sticks. And forgive us our penalties, as we forgive those who cross-check against us, Lead us not into elimination. But deliver us to victory. In the name of the fans, ...Lord Stanley, and in the name of the Wings. Amen... GO WINGS!!!

Baby Goats :)

Baby Goats Born at Circle D Corral This Week

We’re proud to announce some new arrivals at Disneyland park. We recently shared a photo of an expectant Gadget at Circle D Corral, and this past weekend, Gadget gave birth to three kids: Squisher, Dory and Pearl. Gadget is pictured below with Squisher, who is now two days old.

Just yesterday at 5 a.m. another goat at Circle D Corral named Mulan gave birth to Stitch and Lilo. In the photo below, Stitch is shown on the left, and Lilo (with the white patch on her head) can be seen laying down on the right.

Haiti

YAY! I was accepted on the Haiti Mission Trip - July 19th-31st!! I am hoping to get the support raising stuff out in the mail later this week (seeing as the deposit will be due in about a month). I will be traveling with Outside The Bowl. A group of approximately 12 will serve in conjunction with the Port-de-Paix super kitchen and OTB's partner Northwest Haiti Christian Mission's orphanages, schools and other ministries. More information to follow :)

TV Alice?!

Don't worry Katrina, I didn't forget to blog about it! :)

Have you ever seen the TV version of Alice in Wonderland? It was released in 1985 and was a two part series on TV. I have to say, before Friday night I had never seen it either. It is very 'interesting'. Some of the guys were having 'guy time' Friday night, so Katrina and I decided to watch it (since she LOVES that version and the DVD just arrived). We decided that the writer, actors, or some sort of combination were probably on acid, but that's alright. We didn't end up getting through all of it (it is over a 3 hour flick), but I would recommend, if you want a good laugh (or possible nightmares) to check it out.

It looks like you can watch all of it on YouTube (just in 10 minute increments :)). Here is the first part (about 10 minutes ago), but if you watch the credits you will get a sense of the characters :)

Classic tale of a girl named Alice who follows a white rabbit down a hole into Wonderland, where she can change sizes by eating and drinking and animals talk. After escaping the disturbing Queen of Hearts, she finds that she has ended up on the other side of the looking glass in Looking Glass Land and that there is a mind-created Jabberwocky after her. With the advice of a wise owl and royal chess pieces on her mind, she ventures home, vowing to grow up in this two-part movie which remains most faithful to the original stories written by Lewis Carroll.

One Day To Enter!

Don't forget to enter to win "You & Me" by Kelli Murrary. If you haven't entered, or seen my original blog post about it, you only have 1 more day to win!!! PS If you win and don't want the piece yourself, I am pretty sure Ryan and I would take it off your hands :)

Between The Lines

Saturday night, Ryan and I went and saw Between The Lines. It was a free showing put on by the Oceanside Public Library and the California Surf Museum in one of the old theaters in Oceanside, Sunshine Brooks. The producer and 3 of the guys from the film were there (so they stayed for some Q&A after the film). We both really liked it. If you have the chance to see the film, I would definitely recommend it. PS My mom told me this is where my uncle learned to surf too - the Vietnam War.

SYNOPSIS
BETWEEN THE LINES explores the Vietnam War through the prism of the surfing sub-culture. The film offers unique insight into the dramatic effect that the Vietnam War and draft had on young American men who rode waves.

Between the Lines explores the choice that most draft age surfers faced during the Vietnam War era: either go to war or evade the draft. It was one or the other. Between the Lines delves into the lives of two surfers who choose opposite paths. Pat Farley and Brant Page.

While following the lives of these two surfers the film chronicles the impact of the Vietnam War on the surfing lifestyle. From the peaceful shores of Hawaii to the canopy jungles of Vietnam, Between the Lines excavates the surfing cultures response to an extraordinary circumstance.

Sold PJ

Today we had quite the ordeal. I posted my car up on Craigslist on Friday. I got an email from a girl asking if she could see it yesterday. I gave her the address, told her to drive by and see it, and let me know if she was interested. She emailed me last night and said they were interested. This morning they came by. It was pretty long (we went with them to get a smog check, to AAA to get the title changed over, to the bank to get the cashiers check, etc), but we walked away with the price we wanted and an funny story to tell. They wanted to take a picture before we left the bank, so that is what the picture is... Us, the old owners, and them, the new owners. Just for those of you interested, we are going to be a one car family for a while, while looking for a SCOOTER for me!! YAY!!

Home Sweet Home

Detroit: Can the once proud Motor City be saved?

It's no surprise that Detroit's rise and fall can also be plotted on a chart by the ebb and flow of American automobile manufacturers and suppliers. Today, there are three large automakers that operate on a global scale that are based in or around Detroit, Michigan. That's a far cry from how things used to be in the city. Nameplates like Packard and Hudson once grace many an automotive plant within the Detroit city limits, but all that's left of these great manufacturing sites are now piles of rubble and abandoned buildings in various states of disrepair.

Even the Big Three automakers, namely General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, are relics of their former selves. After 77 consecutive years as the largest automaker in the world, General Motors was passed up by Japan's Toyota in 2008. Similarly, Ford is now the third largest seller of automobiles in the United States, and Chrysler was recently passed for the number four position by Honda, also out of Japan. And we're all familiar with last summer's bankruptcies of both GM and Chrysler.

Retro

I love the retro look :)

New Retro Inspired Tees Featuring the Matterhorn and the Flying Saucers, Have Landed!

If you’ve been to the park lately then you’ve probably seen some of the attraction t-shirts currently available in our stores, including the Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. As we gear up for our 55th anniversary, our Product Development team headed to the vault to pay tribute to some of the attractions seen throughout the years. Just this week we added the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Flying Saucers to the list of available attraction tees.

Associate Product Developer Summer Bloomfield is the driving force behind these retro-inspired attraction tees. She let me know that Disney enthusiasts can plan on seeing many more in the future, at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. When asked about her inspiration to create the tees, Summer said: “Everyone has their favorite attraction, that one thing they have to do when they’re here. For years, a lot of this artwork has been seen in a 2D or flat art format, and now we can bring it to you on a whole different level. It’s a great opportunity to pay tribute to some of our most popular attractions and fan favorites.” Summer assures us that we’ll most likely see new retro-inspired attraction shirts next year, representing Disneyland and Magic Kingdom park, respectively, which means you may find a t-shirt on one coast that you may not find on the other.

7-11 Beer?

7-Eleven Launches Branded Beer

This week, convenience-store chain 7-Eleven announced it would begin carrying its own budget brand of beers, dubbed Game Day. The news made me do a double take, nearly causing me spit out the sublimely hoppy Stone IPA I was drinking. Was 7-Eleven angling to be my low-cost craft-beer salvation?

Mmm...not exactly. As expected, the decision was driven less by a desire to sell great brews than the bottom line. Beer purchases in convenience stores dipped 4 percent last year, according to research group SymphonyIRI -- nearly double domestic beer sales' 2.2 percent decline.

CA Plates

California Plates Say FARMNG IS GR8

Old McDonald is about to get his own license plate in California. Drivers who want to support the state's agriculture industry can pony up $50 in addition to normal registration costs for the plates, which will feature a white background with the word "agriculture" along the bottom. There's also an image of a blazing yellow sun rising over a lush green field over a somewhat-bizarre tribute to the letter 'F': "Food-Fiber-Fuel-Flora." (Fiber? Huh.)

This fund-raising strategy is nothing new, of course -- states have been collecting fees for specialized plates for years, allowing drivers to showcase everything from breast-cancer awareness (Ohio) to wildflowers (Virginia) to lighthouse preservation (Michigan). California's new plate profits would be used mainly for education and training programs for secondary school kids interested in farming.

"Many of the agricultural leaders in the state have come through those programs," says Steven Lyle, spokesman for the California department of agriculture, "as well as many farmers and ranchers. They do a tremendous job of teaching our young people."

Status Updates

Never Say THIS on Facebook or Twitter

The most dangerous thing you can post to your Facebook page or Twitter account is information about where you're going when you are not at home.

By telling the world you are on vacation in the Bahamas, or even just eating at your favorite local restaurant, you're letting potential thieves know that you're not at home.

Financial writers Ken and Daria Dolan warn that how you use Facebook and Twitter can be hazardous to your wealth!

"Burglars are fond of your constant updates," the Dolans told AOL. "Would you stand up in the middle of a crowd of strangers and announce that you're leaving on vacation for three days and then tell everyone your address? Of course not, but that's exactly what you are doing if you share such information online."

Dancing Dog

Dancing Dog on 'Britain's Got Talent,' Impresses Even Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell might seem like a big ol' meanie, but beneath that skintight shirt beats the heart of a dog lover. The "Britain's Got Talent" judge says he's picked as a potential winner of this year's competition, and she's a furry, four-legged rescue dog named Chandi.

"Chandi is my favorite," he told the (U.K.) Sun. "She is one of the best dancing dogs I've ever seen. She does ballet."

Due to flu, Cowell was forced to miss the TV debut of Chandi and her owner, music teacher Tina Humphrey, according to the Shropshire Star. But the other judges agreed with Cowell's (eventual) assessment and passed the pirouetting pooch on to the next round.

Not only do we love this for the sheer entertainment value, but also because of the obvious bond Humphrey and her dog share. Will this encourage more people to find a "soulmate" of their own at the local animal shelter? Or inspire a canine to dance in studio? We sure hope so!

Congrats Salazars :)

Congrats to Mr. Josh and Mrs. Kristen!! They welcomed their first baby into the world last night - Miss Marissa!! She is 7 lbs 11 oz and about 19 inches. Mom and baby are doing great. Yay!!

Crazy Pickle Sighting

I sold my beach cruiser a few weeks ago. We hadn't really been riding our bikes much and with the idea of moving away from the beach it just seemed right to put The Crazy Pickle up on Craigslist. I ended up selling it to a girl that lives over in Carlsbad. Since she doesn't live too close I figured I wouldn't see the bike anymore. Low and behold, Ryan and I were at the beach yesterday soaking up the rays before the marine layer came in and who did we see... You guessed it... The Crazy Pickle. Sitting right on the beach. Same bell, same basket, same paint job, same Crazy Pickle. I am glad to see the bike getting some rays and use. :)

Haiti Trip?

I came across this on the Outside the Bowl Facebook page last week:

Outside the Bowl is organizing a North Coast Church trip to Haiti for the end of July 2010. A group of approximately 12 will serve in conjunction with the Port-de-Paix super kitchen and OTB's partner Northwest Haiti Christian Mission's orphanages, schools and other ministries.

Today I submitted my application and have asked my two references if they would fill out the forms necessary. We will see if everything works out. It seems like it would be a perfect time to go (with me not working right now), but we will see if it is God's timing.

Optimism

5 Ways to Become an Optimist

With cherry blossoms blooming, baseball season starting, and the stock market hovering near 11,000, it's impossible not to feel a little extra spring in your step. Heck, even our President is beaming with the passage of health reform and hints of job growth. So, perhaps this is as good a time as any to revel in optimism or, at least, nurture positive-thinking if you're a glass-half-empty kind of person.

Need more convincing? A recent study published in Psychological Science found that those with more optimistic attitudes had better-functioning immune systems which, in turn, helped them ward off illnesses. Yet far too many of us assume that optimism is an inborn trait bestowed on a lucky few. That's a completely wrong assumption, says James Maddux, a professor of psychology at George Mason University. Can people learn to be optimists? "The answer is an indisputable yes," says Maddux. He recommends the following...

Hit-Girl

Meet Breakout Star Chloe Grace Moretz

Rated-R movies come out all the time. But they rarely feature a pre-teen female assassin named Hit-Girl who swears like a sailor and kills without remorse. Clearly "Kick-Ass" ain't your average movie. And star Chloe Grace Moretz ain't your average actor.

The young Ms. Moretz isn't the main star of "Kick-Ass," but she's the one getting the most online attention. As the movie hits theaters, Web searches on "chloe moretz" are up an astonishing 3,423% in the past 24 hours. That places her in Yahoo!'s top 250 overall search terms, ahead of such search (and tabloid) mainstays as Lindsay Lohan and even Britney Spears. The word is out on Chloe.

Ryan and I went with some friends to see this movie last night. I hadn't seen any trailers, but wasn't excited about it. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I LOVED the violence and the comedy wasn't too bad either :).

Green Men

Green Men of Vancouver, your current playoff MVPs

In Game 1 of the Vancouver Canucks' Western Conference playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night, they unleashed an acrobatic display of taunting against Kings defenseman Jack Johnson(notes) — including a full headstand.

For the uninitiated, the Green Men were revealed by the Vancouver Sun as British Columbia Institute of Technology students Ryan Sullivan and Adam Forsythe, whose Green Men alter-egos go by Sully and Force.

They initially wanted to use the "Green Man" gimmick at a Seattle Seahawks game, but the bodysuits they ordered arrived too late for the game. The NFL's loss was the NHL's gain. The rest of the inspiration, according to Sully in an interview with Nucks Misconduct:

After watching an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which is where the Greenman originates from, we both looked at each other and I do believe we actually yelled "Eureka" at the same time. It was a little weird, but we knew it was fate. We knew we had to become Greenmen and go to a Canucks game. As for hesitations, there was a few ... I mean we aren't really wearing anything so that was a concern... and the first game we went to, it was about minus-5, so as we walked from our car to GM Place, it was quite tempting to bail out. I'm sure glad we didn't though!

GROSSSSSSS!

Fan at Phillies Game Intentionally Vomits on 11-Year-Old Girl

Vangelo eventually reported the men to the ushers who promptly ejected them from the stadium. And that's when things went from bad to worse.

[Another] fan -- identified by police as Matthew Clemens -- was sitting with another, unrelated group of fans who were also disciplined for acting out when he allegedly did what Vangelo describes as the "most disgusting thing" he's ever seen.

Clemens, 21, positioned himself behind the 11-year-old's chair, stuck his fingers down his throat and vomited on the girl and her father, police said. "He leaned forward, he projectile vomited all over me and my daughter."

Other fans tackled Clemens to the ground ("He was still vomiting on the other fans that were holding him down," Vangelo said) before he was arrested on charges including assault and harassment. Bail has been set at $12,000.

'Glee': Sue Sylvester Strikes a Pose, Channels Madonna

If you missed it or just want to see it again (and again), we've got "Glee's" brilliant shot-for-shot remake of Madonna's dance-floor classic "Vogue" video, starring everyone's favorite sharp-tongued cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch).

The music-video homage will air during next week's episode of "Glee" dedicated to the Material Girl herself, titled "The Power of Madonna," in which other Madge-ical songs, including "Like a Virgin," "Express Yourself," and "Like a Prayer," will be featured.

Sue trades in her signature tracksuit for the Queen of Pop's infamous cone bra — and even draws on a beauty mark — for the black and white video, also starring glee club members Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer). A few lyrics are changed to show us exactly how Sue "C's" it: "Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire. Sue Sylvester, dance on air ... Lauren, Katherine, Lana too. Will Schuester, I hate you."

Deadliest Catch

NO WAY! There was a boat named AFTER ME!! Spelled differently, of course, but still MY NAME!!

The show’s real life and death drama comes back to the forefront, especially when the boats receive a distress signal from a smaller vessel, the Carly Renee. The story of her sinking is captured on a cell phone video camera by a crew member of the first vessel to arrive on scene. While none of the regular crews of Deadliest Catch witnesses the disaster, they do hear of it. The Carly Renee‘s bewildered and clearly frightened captain is a stark reminder to us that this is far more than mere entertainment for some.

New L&O?

'Law & Order' Headed to Los Angeles?

After 20 years, NBC's relationship with the 'Law & Order' franchise is still going strong.

According to sources for Deadline Hollywood, NBC has picked up 'Law & Order: Los Angeles,' the latest show in Dick Wolf's juggernaut franchise, for 13 episodes this fall. 'Brotherhood' creator Blake Masters is co-creating the series with Wolf.

Meanwhile, a 12th season of 'Law & Order: SVU' is looking more and more likely now that show leads Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have cleared their schedules to shoot new episodes this summer, according to the report. Based on contract negotiations from last spring, Hargitay and Meloni are expected return under a one-year deal that includes the option of an additional season.

On the original 'Law & Order' front, Deadline is also reporting that chances are looking good for a record-breaking 21st season. The series' cable home, TNT, is expected to pitch in with an off-network fee to offset the cost of bringing the show back for a new season.

Double Down?

Saw the commercial for this about a week ago... Glad everyone else seems to think it is a bad idea like I thought :)

Many Give KFC's Double Down a Thumbs-Down

The story getting the widest coverage across the Internet so far this week isn't about nuclear arms, the Supreme Court or even Sarah Palin's latest sound bite. It's the debut of the Double Down -- a fast-food phenomenon from KFC.

It's bacon, Monterrey and Pepper Jack cheeses with a dollop of mayonnaise-ish "Colonel's sauce" -- sandwiched between two chicken fillets (fried or grilled). No bread. That's the gimmick. It's why practically every restaurant critic in the land -- along with bloggers for food, pop culture, entertainment and even a few politics sites -- went out and bought one Monday, then wrote about the experience.

Besides complaints about the taste and presentation, KFC is under fire for the Double Down's nutritional content. The fried version has 540 calories and 32 grams of fat, and the grilled has 460 calories and 23 grams of fat. While that's not as bad as some other fast foods, it's enough to make the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine urge the company not to market the meatwich to children.

Way To Go Pads!

Way to go Padres!! I like hearing that they won 17-2!!

Venable, Blanks break out in 10-run fourth as Padres demolish Braves

In one afternoon, the San Diego Padres piled up the kind of numbers that might normally take them an entire homestand to accomplish.

Making their spacious downtown ballpark look more like a bandbox, the Padres routed the Atlanta Braves 17-2 on Monday.
San Diego's 17 runs were its highest total ever for a home opener and the most by any team at Petco Park since it opened in 2004. The Padres also had 19 hits.

Will Venable hit a two-run homer to highlight the 10-run fourth inning. Kyle Blanks homered, doubled and drove in a career-high five runs.

Venable (triple, single, homer) and Blanks (double, homer, single) each finished a hit shy of the cycle. No Padres batter has ever hit for the cycle. Venable scored four runs and drove in two, and Blanks scored three times in San Diego's 42nd home opener.
